13 Beach Reads You Won't Be Able To Put Down This Summer

Summer's the season for fun, sun, and a really good book.

We recently asked members of the BuzzFeed Community to tell us their favorite beach reads — i.e. books they love to read during the summer — as part of our Page Turners reading group. Here are some of the best responses:

1. Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty

Berkley / Via amzn.to

"If you haven't watched the TV series it's based on, the book is a perfect beach read. It flows easily, but has an interesting plot line that you can't help but read more and more of. Plus, it's set in Australia in a beach-side town. It starts with someone dying, but you don't know who dies and who kills them until the very end!"

2. All American Boys by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely

Atheneum / Via amzn.to

"It's YA fiction about a black teenager who gets severely beaten by a white cop after being wrongly accused of robbery. It’s such an important story and is told through multiple perspectives."

3. The Ruins by Scott Smith

Vintage / Via amzn.to

“It's a good horror/thriller about four twenty-somethings who travel to South America. (I don’t want to say more and risk spoiling it, but it’s a really fun read!) I read it almost every summer. There’s a movie of it, too, but it’s terrible. Read the book instead!"

4. The Perfect Mother by Aimee Molloy

Harper / Via amzn.to

"I personally love reading thrillers on the beach (or at home during the summer, wishing I was at the beach), and this novel is a great page-turner that will keep you guessing until the end! The book is about a group of Brooklyn moms who become connected when one of their babies goes missing during the Fourth of July. Three moms in the group become obsessed with figuring out who would do such a horrible thing, and as secrets are exposed and friendships tested, the story builds to a dramatic conclusion I never saw coming!"

5. The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom

Touchstone / Via amzn.to

"It is such a powerful story about female strength and family love, and I would totally recommend it to anyone who loves historical fiction!"

6. Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind by Yuval Noah Harrari

Harper Perennial / Via amzn.to

"It's one of the most insightful books about the history of our species I’ve ever read. It’s written in a very entertaining way that's easy to understand. The book made me look at things in a different way and understand new things about our society! Would recommend to anyone who wants to add to their basic knowledge about humans."

7. Never Let You Go by Chevy Stevens

St. Martin's Griffin / Via amzn.to

"Set in an awesome location, this thriller is about a woman who escapes her abusive ex-husband, but when he gets out of jail, he finds her and suddenly her daughters get followed, her new boyfriend is hurt, her dog poisoned, and she gets increasingly paranoid attempting to prove that it’s her ex! And there's an unpredictable twist at the end. Every character also seems to have a motive for psychologically tormenting the main character, which makes the whole thing creepier."

8. Born A Crime by Trevor Noah

John Murray / Via amzn.to

"It's by far the best book I’ve ever read! I would bring it to the beach and the pool to read because I couldn’t put it down. You learn so much about history and life in South Africa but laugh at the same time because the comedy is pure gold! Even my boyfriend (who hasn’t read a book without pictures in years) loved this book. Oh and did I mention I SOBBED through the last few chapters?"

10. One of Us Is Lying by Karen M. McManus

Delacorte Press / Via amzn.to

"I love mysteries, and I love books about teenagers secretly scheming against one another, and this one satisfied both of those itches! Aptly described as 'Pretty Little Liars meets The Breakfast Club,' this book follows a group of teens who go into detention, only for one of them to die in there. Who did it? Who's lying about what? This YA fiction keeps you guessing — I couldn't put this book down until I found out who did it."

11. The Hating Game by Sally Thorne

William Morrow Paperbacks / Via amzn.to

"It's such a good romance with familiar tropes, but full of engaging characters and witty dialogue. I get sucked in every time I read this story, and there's no better place to enjoy it than at the beach!"

12. The Bitchy Waiter: Tales, Tips & Trials from a Life in Food Service by Darron Cardosa

Sterling / Via amzn.to

"It’s about a guy who’s worked as a waiter for about 20 years. It’s autobiographical, based on blog entries. The book is funny and silly, gives great tips on how to be a better customer, and also it’s easy to get into!"

sondere

Get it on Amazon for $8.69+, Barnes & Noble for $8.99+, or a local bookseller through IndieBound here.

13. Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan

Anchor / Via amzn.to

"This book is the perfect summer read — it's quick, fun, and holds your attention. Think a Gossip Girl-type story that's set in Singapore — but the characters are even richer. There are a lot of characters, which can be hard to keep track of, but I love how dynamic and funny they all can be. I honestly wish I read this book on the beach with a fancy drink in my hand, as I pretended to be as ridiculously rich as these characters are."
