A town in the south of Taiwan has built a giant high heel-shaped church that looks just like Cinderella's glass slipper.

Located in Budai Ocean View Park in Chiayi County, the 17-metre tall and 11-metre wide structure is made of 320 glass panes.

According to state news agency CNA, contrary to reports, the structure has no religious function but is a piece of installation art.

Although it was originally named the "Cinderella High-Heel Church", it was also not designed to "attract female worshippers", as other outlets such as the Daily Mail and Mirror have claimed.

A spokesman says the structure is dedicated to the women who suffered from blackfoot disease, a type of gangrene, rampant in the area in the 1950s.

Many of these women had to have their feet amputated in order to survive, dashing all hope of them walking down a red carpet in heels.

Officials say the structure, which will house 100 smaller installations targeted at a female audience, is a form of wish fulfilment for these women.

The church will open to the public on Feb. 8, the first day of the Lunar New Year.
