André Benjamin, aka Outkast’s André 3000, stars as Jimi Hendrix in the new biopic Jimi: All Is By My Side, which was unable to feature Hendrix’s actual music for the score. The Hendrix estate has previously released a statement from the CEO Janie Hendrix, Jimi’s sister, explaining that no film currently has the permission to use his music in a production.
Jimi has received favorable criticism when it premiered at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival, and was written and directed by John Ridley, who won an Academy Award for his screenplay for 12 Years a Slave. The new film depicts the Hendrix’s early years and the dynamic of his relationship with Linda Keith (Imogen Poots).
