When a word/words needs to be changed in a quote, you put it in brackets. It is often to make more sense for the reader. Like if a person says, “I’m going to her house.” The writer might put, “I’m going to [Jan’s] house.”

I have a colleague who is Cuban and her birth name is Maria Angelina. Her teacher (in the 70s) said that was too difficult, and changed it to Mary Ann. That’s what she goes by to this day. Devastating.
