Exciting Visit To Galle Fort

When you’re visiting the old colonial Galle town, there are quite a number of things you can do at the Galle Fort. The Galle Fort which was first built in 1588 by the Portuguese and then fortified by the Dutch around 1649 has been recognized as an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

With an ample number of transport options available in Sri Lanka, you can choose to travel to Galle by car, bus or train! Tip: travelling by train will give you amazing beach views! However, if you’re already staying in a hotel in Galle such as Jetwing Lighthouse Club, you can hop in to a tuk tuk to get to the fort!

The Galle Clock tower

The clock tower is one of the first things you’ll notice as you enter the ancient walls of the fort. It was constructed in 1833 and towers to around 4 storeys high.

Head over to the Galle National Museum to learn about the interesting bits and bobs of Sri Lanka’s rich past – particularly Galle’s history of being ruled by the Portuguese and the Dutch.

Galle is packed with places to eat and drink. As there are many Galle Fort hotels in the area, you can opt to wine and dine at their restaurants or grab a quick meal from the smaller restaurants in the area.
