Nicola Coughlan Revealed How "Bridgerton" Season 1 Was Originally Supposed To End

"How do I say this without being a spoiler?"

WARNING! This story contains some spoilers.

Bridgerton Season 1 could have ended in a different way.

Nicola Coughlan, who plays Penelope Featherington in the series, revealed what was originally supposed to happen during an appearance she made for Netflix's Tudum event.

Coughlan revealed all when she was asked how she found out that her character was really Lady Whistledown, the mysterious gossip columnist, in the show.

Lady Whistledown’s identity was shockingly revealed at the end of Bridgerton. It was more exciting than finding out that Dan was really Gossip Girl.

"I found out in a bizarre way,” she said, “because when we auditioned we knew very little about the show.”

“It was only after getting cast that then I found out, and I found out on an internet fan forum because I realized that there was this huge, huge fandom behind these books," Coughlan said.

"It was like this whole other world opened up, but they were like, 'When Penelope is revealed as Lady Whistledown...' And I went, 'WHAT?'"

Coughlan explained that those in charge didn’t know if they were going to reveal Lady Whistledown’s identity in season 1 or season 2. But when they finally made up their minds, they had to reshoot the ending.

"It was a reshoot in July, so they had filmed a different ending,” Coughlan shared. "They were going to make it seem like it was Cressida Cowper."

Cressida Cowper is a debutante who has been competing with Daphne for the hearts of the most handsome suitors.

However, they knew that wasn’t going to work once they figured out Penelope's Season 2 storyline.

Now that I know what might’ve happened, I’m really glad that Bridgerton revealed Lady Whistledown’s identity the way they did. What a page-turner!
