Lil' Kim Revealed Her Iconic MTV VMAs Look Happened Because Of A Joke Missy Elliott Used To Tell

"My nipples used to pop out so much on their own."

Lil’ Kim is one of the most iconic rappers around, and just like her lyrics, her style has become quite unforgettable.

One of her best outfits was the revealing lavender jumpsuit she wore to the 1999 MTV Video Music Awards, and in a new interview with People magazine, Lil’ Kim explained how that look came to be.

She revealed that her stylist, Misa Hylton, got the idea from a joke Missy Elliott used to tell.

"My nipples used to pop out so much on their own," Kim said with a laugh. "The girls used to laugh at me, and Missy said, 'Girl, your nipples pop out so much. One day, you need to just come outside with one nipple out.'"

"We were laughing, but Misa's light bulb went off and she just went from there,” Kim continued.

“The Jump Off” rapper completed her look with a lavender wig. But even though it looked beautiful, Kim said that wasn’t the way it was supposed to be.

"How the whole lavender wig came out was funny," Kim said, because her hairstylist accidentally "oversaturated something, and the whole blonde wig came out lavender."

"She was so stressed because we were literally 45 or 30 minutes away from showtime," the musician recalled. "She was like, 'Misa, oh my god. I have to redo the hair; the whole wig is lavender.'”

“Misa was like, 'Did you say lavender? Kim's outfit is lavender. 'It's perfect!' And I'm always with the shit. I was like, 'Let's do it! Put it on me,’” Lil’ Kim said. “I'm always excited to see what I'll look like in different colors."

The outfit turned out to be a success, and to this day, it’s still known as one of Lil’ Kim’s most iconic looks.
