A Man Who Drove Into Pedestrians In Melbourne's CBD Has Been Found Guilty Of Murder

The jury took 57 minutes to find James Gargasoulas guilty of the murder of six people, and of injuring 27 others, during the Bourke Street rampage in January 2017.

A jury has found 28-year-old James Gargasoulas guilty of the murder of six people, and of recklessly injuring 27 others, when he drove at pedestrians along a busy shopping strip in Melbourne's CBD on January 20, 2017.

Six people were killed as a result of the rampage: three-month-old Zachary Matthew-Bryant; Yosuke Kanno, 25; Bhavita Patel, 33; Jess Mudie, 22; Matthew Si, 33; and Thalia Hakin, 10.

After a five-day trial, and less than one hour of jury deliberation, Gargasoulas was found guilty of their murders and recklessly injurying 27 others during the incident.

Gargasoulas had pleaded not guilty to all charges. According to Nine News Gargasoulas had claimed psychosis and delusions due to drug use at the time of the rampage. He did not use mental impairment as a defence, however.

The ABC said he apologised for the attack, and said a "premonition" before the event gave him permission to run down people to evade police.

According to The Australian, a sentencing hearing will be held in January.

Last week Bourke St was the scene of another attack. Hassan Khalif Shire Ali set alight his car on Bourke St in the Melbourne CBD on Friday afternoon and stabbed three men before being shot by police.

One man, 74-year-old Melbourne cafe owner Sisto Malaspina, died from his injuries, while the other two men have non life-threatening injuries.
