Stevie Nicks Thanked Taylor Swift For Writing This Song That Helped Her Grieve Christine McVie’s Death

Nearly six months after Christine McVie died, Stevie Nicks is opening up about grieving her former Fleetwood Mac bandmate’s death.

According to a video shared on Twitter, Stevie provided an update on how she’s doing during her concert on Monday in Atlanta. Specifically, Stevie thanked Taylor Swift for one of her more recent songs that helped her process the loss of Christine.

Stevie and Christine were the sole two women in Fleetwood Mac (which also consisted of fellow bandmates Lindsey Buckingham, John McVie, and Mick Fleetwood) at its height in the mid-1970s, though the lineup had previously and would continue to change.

“Thank you to Taylor Swift for doing a favor for me, and that is, writing a song called 'You're on Your Own, Kid,'" Stevie said at the concert, according to the video.

“You’re On Your Own, Kid” features on the Midnights album, which Taylor dropped last year. The song details a yearning for love only to realize you’re left all alone.

"That is the sadness of how I feel,” Stevie said of the song’s message and how it relates to Christine’s death, noting she and her former collaborator “weren’t phone buddies.”

"We'd go back to Fleetwood Mac, and we'd walk in and just be like, 'Little sister, how are you?' Stevie said. “It was like never a minute had passed. Never an argument in our entire 47 years. Never. So when it was the two of us, the two of us were on our own, kids,” she said.

Like the message in Taylor’s song, Stevie is learning to be on her own without Christine. “We always were, and now I'm having to learn to be on my own, kid, by myself.”

Following Christine’s death last year, Stevie put out a statement. “A few hours ago I was told that my best friend in the whole world since the first day of 1975, had passed away,” she wrote, noting that she’d hoped to sing Haim’s song “Hallelujah” to Christine but didn't get the opportunity to do so.

“Hallelujah” was partly inspired by the death of bandmate Alana Haim’s friend.

This isn't the first time Stevie has spoken positively of Taylor. In 2010, the duo performed together at the Grammys, singing “Rhiannon” by Fleetwood Mac and “You Belong With Me?” by Taylor.

“Taylor reminds me of myself in her determination and her childlike nature. It's an innocence that's so special and so rare,” Stevie said in shortly after the Grammys performance for Taylor’s entry into the TIME 100 that year.
