Most of these “tips” seem to come from a place that has no idea what mental illness is actually like. Being productive doesn’t magically lessen my depression, it drains my energy more. Same with forcing myself to socialize. Very often the greatest struggle is the idea that my depression and anxiety makes me “worthless”, because it makes it very difficult to keep up the busy life our society deems important. Sometimes you need an actual break because dealing with this is too draining. We see far too many articles that don’t seem to get this and instead conflate mental health with some neurotypical idea of keeping up an outwardly successful life and then taking pride in that, which has very little relevance or benefit to mentally ill individuals. Simply put, a bit of stress isn’t the same as chronic mental illness, and just because I’m keeping up with my life does not mean I’m in any way less plagued by these issues.
