How Much Do You Know About America?

Yes, there are 50 states. Let's hope most of you got that right.

There are actually 566 federally recognized Native American tribes throughout the U.S., with 200-300 more tribes that are not federally recognized.

So, this is kind of a trick question because there is no easy answer. The Native Americans were here before any of these other people, so was America even really "discovered?"

There are, in fact, 325 state and federally recognized Native American Reservations throughout the United States, which are each considered to be a sovereign nation.

While it is difficult to calculate exactly how many people were living in America when Europeans arrived, scholars now argue that there were between 5 and 20 million Native Americans living here when the settlers first arrived.

Horses were introduced to North America by the Spanish!

While women gained suffrage in 1920, voting rights were not extended to all Native Americans until 1965.

There are 24 main languages spoken in the U.S., but in total there are 337 languages in use. 176 of these are indigenous.

The bald eagle has many important symbolic meanings, within colonial history and for Native Americans.

Smallpox was the worst epidemic in the history of the U.S., killing approximately 90% of the Native American population upon European arrival in the 16th century.

Baseball may be America's sport today, but Native Americans were playing lacrosse in America long before baseball existed!

Harvard was the first college in America, founded in 1636, and it also held the first Indian College which was founded in 1650 and dismantled in 1690.

The Declaration of Independence is debated by many to be the most important document in U.S. history, as it marked our independence from Britain.

This is a belt made from wampum shell that commemorates the 1794 Treaty of Canandaigua to create peace with the Haudenosaunee. It is considered to be as binding as any other treaty document.
