The Mating Market theory dictates that a women is more likely to be able to find a more attractive partner for a casual fling than they are for a husband. This is because attractive men are more willing to have sex with a less attractive women when there is no hint of long-term commitment.

This theory means that women married to a more 'matched' partner may be tempted to have an affair with men whom they find more sexually attractive.

Therefore women can actually acquire better genes from casual affairs compared to with their regular partner. Better genes mean more attractive qualities such as facial symmetry, better health and resistance to illness.

No this isn't your typical household insurance! Women are more likely to have affairs so as to have a backup should situations with their partner take a down turn. This 'backup' man could potentially offer support and resources should her partner not be able to carry on doing so.

Self-Esteem Boost

Having an affair and the feeling of being 'wanted' by another can often be why women stray. Since, in theory, women can have a casual encounter with someone usually 'out of their league', an affair can provide women with increased self-esteem and can elevate her mood!

Women can see an affair as an opportunity to feel better about herself and finding someone fresh who will appreciate her assets could be a strong factor into why women stray.
