Notable artists: Tobias Jesso Jr., London O'Connor

Founded in 2004 and currently operating as an imprint of Matador Records, New York-based label True Panther Sounds ha provided some of the most interesting sounds in the industry. The former San Francisco band Girls was True Panther’s first artist acquisition, and their debut album ended up becoming one of the most critically acclaimed releases of 2009.

True Panther Sounds has grown since then, and despite Matador purchasing TPS in 2009, the label hasn’t deviated from its goal to support indie acts. Currently, True Panther Sounds boasts the likes of Archy Marshall/King Krule, London O’Connor, ABRA, and Lil Silva as some of the artists on its dope roster.

Boy Better Know

Notable artists: Skepta, JME, Wiley

In many ways, Boy Better Know is the epitome of what an indie label is supposed to be. After the dissolution of Meridian Crew—which included Skepta and JME—and legal woes, the Adenuga brothers opted to launch their very own label. Thus was born Boy Better Know, which, since its creation in 2005, has established a signature aesthetic and developed an impressive roster, acting more like a crew or collective than a traditional label.

Black Acre

Consistently releasing incredible work by fascinating artists, it’s label founder Ian Merchant’s has committed to not compromising that has made the label unique. If you’re in the market for avant-garde sounds that push the envelope, hop on the Black Acre bandwagon.
