This is a pretty simple concept, education has a hefty price and by playing for your school, they will more often than not compensate the price of education.

2. Employment Laws

The laws for employment and income tax will vary from state to state. Organizing that into a fair system for all would be a huge hassle and a logistical nightmare. What happens if a player gets hurt, are they compensated? What if they aren't performing well and get cut, what're they entitled to? This has disaster written all over it.

3. Proper Compensation

The price of education for a Stanford student is different than the tuition price for an instate athlete going to a state school. Situations like these would occur a lot because of varying prices of education. It would be unfair to suggest schools that compensate more money for education have to pay on top of that to retain their players. This would result in a very powerful shift in balance in the NCAA realm.

4. Tradition

College athletics have taken place for years, never with players being paid. Right when you start to pay current players, many former players are going to come out and demand they receive compensation for their efforts. Certainly pioneers of sports (Michael Jordan - UNC Chapel Hill/Tim Tebow - UF) can take partial ownership for the prominence of their alma mater because of their impact. There's no right way to make everyone involved taken care of properly.

5. They're student-athletes

Out of principle, athletes at the collegiate level are still students at the end of the day. Yes, they work longer hours, travel, and don't get the normal college experience, but that's why their education comes at a premium. College athletes know what they are getting into before committing to a team and should not agree to play if they seek further payment than what the school is offering. The majority of athletes will go pro in something aside from their sport, and the ones that do go professional will be offered more than enough money to make it all worthwhile.
