'Twas the Day Before School Ends - By A Tired Teacher

As the day before school ends, teachers across NYS are sitting at their desks contemplating if it's worth taking a personal day tomorrow. Don't do it. Read this instead.

Twas the Day Before School Ends

Twas the Day Before School Ends

Twas the day before school ends, when all through the rooms,

Every teacher was singing some end of school tunes.

They all dreamt of the bar and a nice cold beer,

In hopes they won't see the same kids next year.

The textbooks and novels were all snug on their shelves,

While they cursed administration for having to do this themselves.

And that one teacher is just getting in the way,

Continue your board game, go on and go play!

When out in the hall, there arose such a clatter,

They all look to go check to see what was the matter.

Away to the door, I moved pretty slow,

To find a new teacher, her papers scattered below.

She cried and mumbled about being effective,

Good thing my tenure is very protective.

I did not want my day to start to get tough,

So I returned to my desk to pack up my stuff,

When what to my wondering eyes did appear,

But an end of year gift from a rodent, so dear.

More rapid than eagles, my curses they came,

And I screamed, and I shouted, and passed on the blame,

    I went on a rampage

    For this is an outrage.

This shit is disgusting, no matter how small.

Now get away! Get away! Get away all!

As pens were scoring each regents exam,

They met with an obstacle, man, oh man.

So down to the office, the scorers they flew,

With the test in their hand, and a red pen too-

And then, in a second, they met the person in charge,

Asking how to solve this problem, a problem so large.

As they listened closely, to the student's phone number,

They planned to call and wake him from his slumber.

For writing in pen was not a hard task,

Now back to the office, to take out the flask.

As they stared at the clock, it kept ticking away,

While the teachers awaited the following day.

The finals all had a score,

So how can admin. ask for more?

They labeled their cabinets and chairs,

Wasting time, writing down the repairs.

For no matter how long summer will be,

Broken desks, next year, is all they will see.

One more day in this heat engrossed sauna,

I don't want to be here tomorrow, I really don't wanna.

    But just one more day,

So I think it's safe to say,

I can make it 24 more hours,

Then it's time to sit and smell the flowers.

For three short months is all that we get,

But we will return in September, no need to fret.

Because we are here to follow our dream,

To think and work together as a team.

Because we made a promise to those children so small,

We would teach them until they grow old and so tall.

Because we love what we do,

And we will follow it through.

We will return soon, looking for a new start,

Each with an open mind and a full heart.
