Spike Lee's film that focuses on the racial tensions in the Bed-Stuy neighborhood in Brooklyn is as important a watch today as it was back in the late '80s. 3. Phantom Thread

This Paul Thomas Anderson feature still stands as Daniel Day Lewis's last film before his retirement. A visual stunner, it took home the 2017 Oscar for Best Costume Design.

4. Sign o' the Times

Prince's 1987 concert film (from the album of the same name) might not be as memorable as Purple Rain, but it's not nearly as forgettable as Under the Cherry Moon. Plus, we're still two years away from that Batman soundtrack. "U Got the Look" is still a banger though.

8. The Man Who Wasn't There

An all-too-often-overlooked Coen Brothers gem that's a send-up to classic film noir (all the way down to being an actual black and white film). Billy Bob Thornton comes as close as humanly possible to playing an actual ghost of a man. Early Scar-Jo appearance too!

9. 1968

1968 is sure to lose its title as "Most Tumultuous Year in America History" by the time 2020 ends (just to make it official). This doc (narrated by Serena Williams) focuses on the iconic protest of Tommie Smith and John Carlos at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico and just what that meant during a time in this nation's history that is eerily similar to ours in the present day.

Thinking about having kids? This one might change your mind, as Charlize Theron exudes just how exhausting (mentally and physically) having and raising children can be. Also, twist alert! There's kind of a big one worth watching for.

11. Escape from New York

12. Zombieland

It's a zombie road trip movie that culminates at an amusement park (and was good enough to merit a sequel 10 years later). C'mon, it's Woody Harrelson and Emma Stone. Do we even have to sell this one to you?

13. The Deer Hunter

The Deer Hunter is not an easy film to watch, but it is an amazing one, especially if you can sit still for three hours and experience the horrors wrought by the Vietnam War on three steelworker friends from Pennsylvania. Robert DeNiro. Meryl Streep. Christopher Walken. Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actor awards. Plus, everything you ever need to know about playing Russian roulette.

14. American Psycho

Based on Bret Easton Ellis's novel of 1980s excess, we quickly learn that Patrick Bateman's (played by a pre-Batman Christian Bale) principal interests are dinner reservations, business cards, the works of Huey Lewis and the News, Genesis, and, well, murder. Lots and lots of grizzly murder. Maybe. Still not sure.

This is Scotsman Sean Connery playing a character named Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez, who's actually a centuries-old Egyptian. Let that sink in for a second. This is '80s action-adventure at its finest, involving sword fights, immortals vying for "The Prize," and beheading each other to experience "The Quickening." Totally bonkers and has nothing to do with Outlander.

Perhaps the stabbiest and slashiest non-horror movie ever made. If you don't like knives, then you will not like this film. Viggo Mortensen. Russian mobsters. Lots and lots of tattoos (and violence). Not for the weak of heart.

24. The Exorcist III

An imperfect film for sure, but an underrated horror movie gem as well. The Exorcist III features one of the all-time great jump scares you'll ever experience. You think it's coming, then it doesn't, and then it does. Even upon multiple viewings, it'll still get you.

25. Serial Mom

This John Waters dark comedy serves as a satire of our obsessions with "true crime" (podcasts anyone?). Kathleen Turner plays the titular mom who murders folks for the smallest of indiscretions (like wearing white after Labor Day). Kind of a proto-Karen, come to think of it.
