The suspected U.S.-led strikes killed more than a dozen ISIS militants Wednesday night, a monitoring group reported. Five civilians were also said to have been killed.

Airstrikes in northeast Syria on Wednesday night killed at least 14 Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) fighters, along with five civilians, Reuters reported.

The strikes targeted oil refineries near al Mayadin, al Hasakah, and Abu Kamal, a U.S. official told Reuters. Destroying the refineries is aimed at cutting off one of the extreme militant group's chief revenue sources, the official said.

Pentagon spokesman Rear Adm. John Kirby said ISIS makes up to $2 million a day from the oil from its mobile refineries, CNN reported.

The fatality counts were reported to Reuters by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which is monitoring the conflict.

The U.S. began airstrikes in Syria earlier this week.

The strikes — which are being carried out by a coalition that includes Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Jordan, and the United Arab Emirates — are designed to stop the spread of ISIS.

The strikes have also targeted the Khorosan group, which President Obama said was plotting terror attacks against the U.S.
