Here Are The Stores That Are Actually Closed On Thanksgiving Day

These retailers are observing the Thanksgiving holiday in lieu of extending Black Friday sales even earlier.

9. Costco

“Our employees work especially hard during the holiday season and we simply believe that they deserve the opportunity to spend Thanksgiving with their families. Nothing more complicated than that," a spokesperson said.


11. Dillard's

“We choose to remain closed on Thanksgiving in longstanding tradition of honoring of our customers’ and associates’ time with family,” a spokesperson for Dillard’s told ThinkProgress.

13. GameStop

"While other retailers are competing to open doors earlier and earlier for the holidays, GameStop is 'Protecting the Family' again this year by keeping doors closed on Thanksgiving and advocating for others to do the same," a spokesperson said.


17. Ikea

"Ensuring a great work environment is essential for our business and continued growth, and we want our 14,000 co-workers across the U.S. to be able to enjoy the day celebrating with family and friends," a spokesperson said.

18. Joann Fabrics

“We ask a lot from our Team Members during the holidays, and Thanksgiving Day is a valued tradition for many families,” said Travis Smith, chief executive officer and president of Jo-Ann Stores, in a statement to Mental Floss last year.


34. Marshalls, Homegoods, and T.J. Maxx.

“We consider ourselves an Associate-friendly Company, and, we are pleased to give our Associates the time to enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends,” a spokesperson for TJX stores told Think Progress in a statement last year.

With the exception of REI, all these stores will reopen on Black Friday and all will be open online on Thanksgiving Day.


Radioshack will remain open on Thanksgiving Day this year. An earlier version of this list included it after the store was closed on Thanksgiving in 2014.
