The rocket is a reference to an old Twilight Zone episode called The Long Morrow, where it's a symbol of a man waiting his whole life for something. (Awwwww.)

In season six, April Nardini, age 12, appears at the diner and takes a sample of Luke's hair to determine who her father is for a science fair project. He is in fact her father, and her arrival puts a wedge in Luke and Lorelai's upcoming wedding.
