14 Movie Sequels Coming To The Big Screen In 2022

I need more Dr. Strange in my life ASAP.

There are a lot of movies coming out this year, and a lot of those movies are sequels.

Here are some of the biggest ones coming out in 2022:

(Disclaimer: We're not going by Randy's rules in Scream 2 — even though some of these are parts of trilogies or larger franchises, we're counting them as sequels.)

1. Downton Abbey: A New Era

Downton Abbey: A New Era hits theaters in the UK on April 29 and in the US on May 20, with Hugh Dancy joining the cast.

2. Sonic the Hedgehog 2

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will be released on April 8. Ben Schwartz, Jim Carrey, James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Adam Pally, and Lee Majdoub will all be back, and are joined by Idris Elba, Shemar Moore, and Colleen O'Shaughnessey.

3. Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore

The third installment of the five-part Fantastic Beasts series hits theaters on April 8 in the UK and April 15 in the US. Mads Mikkelsen joins the cast as the new Grindelwald.

4. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be released on May 6. Benedict Cumberbatch, Rachel McAdams, Benedict Wong, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Michael Stuhlbarg will all return. Xochitl Gomez will join the MCU in this film as America Chavez, while Elizabeth Olsen will reprise her role as Scarlet Witch.

5. Top Gun: Maverick

Top Gun: Maverick is set to come out on May 27, with Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, and Jon Hamm joining OGs Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer.

6. Jurassic World: Dominion

Jurassic World: Dominion will be released June 10, and features the return of Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum, Laura Dern, and BD Wong from the original Jurassic Park series.

7. Minions: The Rise of Gru

Minions: The Rise of Gru — out on July 1 — will serve as an origin story for Steve Carell's character Gru. Taraji P. Henson, Lucy Lawless, Dolph Lundgren, Danny Trejo, Jean-Claude Van Damme, and Michelle Yeoh also join the voice cast as members of a group of villains called The Vicious 6.

8. Thor: Love and Thunder

Thor: Love and Thunder is the second of three MCU sequels coming out in 2022, and will hit theaters on July 8. Most of the original Thor and Guardians of the Galaxy cast will return, and Christian Bale will play Gorr the God Butcher.

9. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is slated to come out on September 23 and will follow Puss's adventures as he tries to restore the eight lives he's burned through. Both Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek are set to return.

10. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse - Part One

The Into the Spider-Verse sequel (and first installment of Across the Spider-Verse) will hit theaters on October 7. Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, and Jake Johnson will reprise their roles, and Oscar Isaac and Issa Rae will voice characters as well.

11. Halloween Ends

The final chapter in David Gordon Green and Danny McBride's Halloween trilogy comes out on October 14. Not much is known about the film, but Jamie Lee Curtis, Andi Matichak, Kyle Richards, and Will Patton will all be back.

12. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is scheduled to be released on November 11. There isn't much known about it, other than If Beale Street Could Talk and Judas and the Black Messiah star Dominique Thorne will make her MCU debut as Riri Williams (aka Ironheart).

13. Avatar 2

20th Century Fox

The long-awaited Avatar sequel is set for a holiday release, hitting theaters on December 16. Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, and Stephen Lang are all reprising their roles, and newcomers include Vin Diesel, Michelle Yeoh, and Jemaine Clement.

14. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom

DC

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is also due to come out on December 16 (though it wouldn't be all that surprising if it or Avatar 2 moved dates to avoid the competition). Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, Patrick Wilson, Dolph Lundgren, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Temuera Morrison, and Nicole Kidman are all returning for the sequel.
