Let This Thread Of Teens Singing After Their High School Musicals Were Postponed Lift Your Spirits

"I want to be your audience!"

Over the weekend, Broadway legend Laura Benanti reached out to high schoolers whose musicals have been impacted by the coronavirus outbreak, asking them to share clips of themselves singing:

Dark times for all. Trying to find some bright spots. If you were meant to perform in your High School musical and it was cancelled please post yourself singing and tag me. I want to be your audience!! Sending all my love and black market toilet paper. πŸ’›

The post was then shared by many other prominent Twitter users, including Lin-Manuel Miranda:

Thank you, @LauraBenanti, thank you kids, I'm watching too. #SunshineSongs

What followed was pure musical theater magic and a thread of beautiful, uplifting, emotional performances. Like these gorgeous harmonies from teens preparing for a production of Footloose at Broadway Kids Studio Inc. in Davie, Florida:

@LauraBenanti Our Production of Footloose was just postponed. These kids have worked very hard!

(Honestly, Ben Platt summed it up better than I can.)

This amazing portrayal of Miss Honey from Matilda:

@LauraBenanti Thank you @LauraBenanti ! My daughter Emma was supposed to play Miss Honey in Matilda at Columbia High School. It was cancelled the night before opening and it’s her senior show. Heartbreaking!

This beautiful cover of "Burn" from Hamilton by Jake Heston Miller, who's ready to go should a "Hamilton for Kids" production ever happen:

@LauraBenanti My baby brother doesn’t have Twitter so I’m sharing for him! He says that he’s ready if @Lin_Manuel ever decides to do a Hamilton for kids!

And this stunning rendition of "Waiting for Life" from Once on This Island by teen Khadija Sankoh:

@LauraBenanti I attend Union High School and we are doing Once On This Island. As of now our show is postponed but we don’t know how long. This is a little snipbit of Waiting For Life

The performance was praised by many within the Broadway community, like Stephanie J. Block:

    Daveed Diggs:

    @khadija_sankoh @LauraBenanti πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯

    Lea Salonga:

@khadija_sankoh @LauraBenanti Incredible talent out there!!! Holy wow!!! Great job with that song!!!

Oh, and Hailey Kilgore, who recently played the role of Ti Moune in Once on This Island on Broadway, danced around to Khadija's rendition:

@khadija_sankoh @LauraBenanti Save my life while quarantining.

What I'm saying is, the entire thread is full of beautiful gems like the ones above and it's really worth watching if you need something to smile about. So here it is one more time, with the hashtag #SunshineSongs:

Use the tag #SunshineSongs so whoever wants to can be your audience!

If you or anyone you know has a video to share, please keep spreading the joy.
