What Does Your Style Says About Your Music Taste?

“ A particular way of life which expresses certain meaning and values not only in the art of learning, but also in institutions and ordinary behaviour” (Hedmidge, pg. 16).

It was the term “ordinary behaviour” that stood out to me. What does that mean I thought, “to be ordinary”?. And then as I watched people walked past me on campus, I caught myself pre-judging them by their exterior look and clothing choices. “He’s wearing skinny jeans and a tight top, he must be gay”, I thought. “She’s wearing a track suite, she must be a student athlete”. And as one girl passed, my mind went blank, there was nothing about her that stood out, she blended in with the rest of the crowd … she was just, “ordinary”.

Clothes are a funny thing, although they are nothing more than hundreds of tiny threads sown together, they ultimately share a universal meaning. With or without knowing it, your choice of clothing in the morning is one of the most defining choices you’ll make all day. As Hedmige argues, your clothing is a reflection of the culture you are apart of.

Style is a huge part of expressing yourself in a creative manner. Today in pop culture, people use concert outfits as a way to express their culture and musical tastes. Before the music begins at a show, you can likely pick out what genre you are about to see just by looking out into the crowd. Here are three different music genres who use clothing to help define their culture.

    Country

Country music particularly has a distinct style. There is an easy way to fit in and stand out at a country concert. For the men, outfits generally include plaid long sleeves or t-shirts, blue jeans, cowboy boots and or a cowboy hat. As for the females, anything from plaids, white tank-tops, cut off jeans, denim, and of course, the boots, are accepted. The choice of clothing represents their southern values, drinking habits and a celebration of the working class.

    Rave

Raving outfits generally reject social norms. The clothing reflects the deviant and rebellious style that Hedmidge explains in his article. It is vibrant, flashy and bold. Clothing is minimal, as fans often choose to wear bathing suites or bras to shows. In addition, fans bring props such as suckers and or baby soothers that are meant to ease their jaw when it "trips out" on hard drugs such as molly and cocaine.

    Indie

Indie concerts attract the hipster crowd who's outfits aren’t as predictable as the ‘ravers’ or country fans because each individual is trying to differentiate themselves from the next. Recently indie concerts have reflected a bohemian dessert style, with long skirts, circled glasses, and big hats. They represent a calmer style of music that celebrates an easy going, free way of life. Style trends are often seen at large festivals such as Coachella.
