39 Things You Probably Need If You Sit For 8+ Hours A Day

Because our bodies kind of hate us when we sit allll day — but these things can make the 9-to-5 grind way more comfortable.

    1. memory foam lumbar pillow you can strap onto practically any chair for instant lower back support, simply a MUST if you work long hours at a desk — or if you drive long hours, since you can use this in a vehicle too! The mesh cover also keeps this pillow breathable so it doesn't get hot over time.

the pillow strapped onto a car

I've had this exact lumbar support pillow since 2018, back when I was still working in an office, and I can't express enough how much it's improved my posture and reduced back pain after long hours of sitting. I initially got it because I was stuck working in one of those awful office chairs with zero lower back support, and years later, I still use it at home. It fills the curve of your spine *perfectly*, and you can adjust the positioning as needed, with straps that go around the back of your chair to hold it steady. I personally use it in conjunction with an ErgoFoam footrest, and I never have back pain after working anymore.

Promising review: "Both my fiancé and I work from home. He has a proper office and office chair and I work at our dining room table. I figured it was time to invest in something to help my back while sitting all day. Works really well! I should have done this months ago." —Emily Racioppi

Get it from Amazon for $26.59+ (available in five colors).

    2. And a memory foam chair cushion (yup, from the same brand) designed to relieve pressure on your tailbone, hips, and lower back while sitting for long periods of time — reviewers say it's worked wonders for their aches and pains. Basically, it's the best thing you'll do for your tushy all year.

The cover is removable and washable!

Promising review: "On a long and uncomfortable flight to Hawaii, I managed to mess up my back and tailbone really bad. That’s how I ended up here, looking for some relief. This stuff is magical, like sitting on the back of a unicorn while coming down a rainbow. I sat down on it and the pressure points were not giving me any issues; I was able to drive out of state the next day NO PROBLEM. Outstanding quality, doesn’t just squish down when you sit on it. The one issue is, you’ll be pretty high up if you plan on using it in the car, but not a deal breaker compared to my coccyx not killing me and having shooting pain up my leg and back." —Mrs. J

Get it from Amazon for $39.99+ (available in five colors).

    3. Plus, an adjustable foam footrest for placing under your desk, giving your feet a soft yet firm support. It essentially brings the floor to you, extremely helpful if you're on the shorter side and your feet don't easily lay flat on the floor! And if you tend to get restless throughout the day, you can flip it over and rock back and forth.

I've been using this particular footrest for a long time now, and I can say I didn't realize how uncomfortable I was while sitting until I had this. I'm 5'3 and use the full height of this footrest to ensure my feet are completely supported, but you can remove the bottom part to adjust the height if needed. The velvety cover also comes off and can be tossed in the washing machine for easy cleaning.

Promising review: "GAME changer. I have slowly built up my perfect ergonomic setup at home and this was the last piece! It has helped my circulation and relieved pressure on my lower back." —Brian Kim

    4. A TikTok-famous armless desk chair beloved for how comfortable it is, especially if you like to sit cross-legged, thanks to its lack of restricting armrests and a wider seat that accomodates your legs and knees. It allows you to recline up to 120 degrees and adjust the height, and the PU leather is waterproof and easy to clean, so you won't have to fret about about staining the white material with your messy lunch.

It is also supremely comfortable with the quality of cushions. I'm 5'8" and I find it spacious with an appropriate amount of height adjustability for feet on the ground. So far great for all day office use!" —Amazon Customer

    5. An adjustable standing desk converter, because we all know sitting for hours straight is terrible for our health. Promising review: "I hate just sitting at my desk all day and this product had very good reviews so I decided to try it and I am SOOO GLAD I did. It is so easy to assemble and adjust up and down. It has plenty of space for me to put things like my mouse pad, speakers, office supplies, candy jar, etc. to make up for the space being taken up on my actual desk. It has the tiniest bit of a wobble when fully extended but it is still very sturdy and it in no way hampers my work flow. I love having the flexibility to stand and stretch my legs for a bit whenever I want and my a$$ is thanking me too!!" —Ginger B.

Get it from Amazon for $119.99+ (available in five sizes and in eight colors).

    6. A FlexiSpot electric standing desk to really ~elevate~ your WFH setup if you're tired of sitting for SO. LONG. I have a FlexiSpot electric standing desk at home (this one, specifically) and love it — it's a great brand, and mine hasn't given me any issues over the past few years.

Promising review: "I wanted to make a change to something cooler, more modern, adjustable, and incapable of incentivizing me storing junk. After assembling it, I am thrilled I chose this desk. With a press of a button, I can raise and lower it to appropriate heights for either comfortably sitting or standing (I'm 5'10"). The material itself is very sturdy. There are NO drawers, which, after 20 years having the other home desk and having desks at work, I realized that drawers do nothing more than collect and store junk. Can't do that with this desk as this desk encourages minimalism and storing that junk somewhere else, i.e. probably the trash while I keep this desk tidy." —David Taylor

Get it from Amazon for $199.99+ (available in five sizes and 12 styles).

    7. And a mini stepper that'll be a game changer if you work from home, especially if a standing desk is already part of your setup. It comes with resistance bands you can use to make it more of a full-body workout, but you can detach those to just use the stepping function and incorporate some exercise into your busy day! Multitasking, we love you.

Promising review: "This thing is awesome. I'm a small, not technical person and managed to haul this thing up two flights of stairs (slowly), unbox, turn on and even connect my phone to the Bluetooth in it. No assembly. Simple instructions. Distance and time measurements seem to be accurate, but the 'calories' might be missing a decimal point. No squealing or groaning under my walking. Not too loud. Slides right under my bed. Didn't need to adjust the belt, though the tool to do so is included." —Crowells

Get it from Amazon for $279.99+ (available in four colors).

    9. A slim laptop stand that'll raise your laptop and bring it closer to eye level, especially handy if you use it with a desktop monitor. This is better for the overall ergonomics of your setup while sitting for long hours, but it also ensures your laptop gets ventilation and doesn't overheat.

Promising review: "This product came very quick, was easy to assemble, and it’s very sturdy. I can’t believe it took me as long as it did to purchase a laptop stand as I’ve been working from home since October. It makes a big difference in my comfort sitting at my desk for eight hours. I have two screens, so I needed my laptop to be elevated so I don’t slump over. Hands down, an absolute must for the home office." —Amazon Customer

Get it from Amazon for $25.99 (available in nine colors).

Promising review: "I got spoiled by a Herman Miller chair at work. I've been putting up with some cheap cloth and foam computer desk chair for years. Now that I'm a bit older, and do some work at home, I needed more comfort and support, and this chair works for what I need and it didn't cost me $800. Granted this one isn't as adjustable, and the lumbar support isn't pronounced, but it is soooo much better than what I had. The best thing about this chair is the size of the seat, which fully supports my butt, and back of my thighs, all the way to the back of my knees." —Christopher L. Dulawan

Get it from Amazon for $204 (available in two colors).

    12. Or a *definition of splurge-worthy* Herman Miller ergonomic chair that'll be the best purchase you've ever made if you WFH or spend a significant amount of your day sitting at a desk. It's *extremely* comfy, unmatched in style, and might be the best thing you've done for your back ever.

It's recommended for people ranging from 5' to 5'11" tall. If you have a tall desk that isn't adjustable and you find this chair a bit too low to the ground, you can pick up leg extenders to add extra height.

Promising review: "I have issues with my lower back and have struggled for years to find the right office chair for my home office. I sit and work about eight to 10 hours a day. Never thought about a ball chair until my doctor said maybe I should try it. Oh my goodness. Why didn’t he suggest this sooner?!! It works fantastic. Because it forces you to sit in an upright position and not slouch it relieves the pressure on the lower back and shoulder blades. While my pain is not completely gone it has gotten better and will probably continue to improve the longer I use the chair. While everyone has different issues and different pain who knows if it will work for you but it did for me. Try it! You might just be amazed." –Katy

Promising reviews: "I am a graphic designer and my hand was hurting so much using my other mouse that I couldn’t work efficiently. I tried this mouse, and the pain and stiffness in my hand is gone. "This mouse is perfect for smaller hands, or people who have any kind of hand pain. I find this extremely comfortable. The buttons on the mouse are very easy to push, and they’re quiet. If you have any arthritis or discomfort in your hand, this is perfect!" —Jaye Hockenberry

And on the caffeine side of things: An electric mug warmer that'll keep your coffee — the lifeblood that fuels your mornings — hot so you're not unpleasantly sipping on room-temp brown water by 10 a.m. With this electric warmer, you'll be able to happily enjoy your caffeinated drink at the perfect temp for hours.

Reviewers suggest turning the heat down from high to medium once the drink gets down to about the halfway point so it stays a comfortable temperature!

After seeing this coffee warmer all over BuzzFeed Shopping and even gifting my dad one for Christmas, I finally decided to buy one for myself. Based on all the reviews, I was pretty confident I'd soon be kicking myself for not getting it sooner, and that proved to be true: This thing not only looks good, but works great for keeping my coffee warm all day long (because yes, I'm one of those people that'll sip on coffee until 5 p.m., all right!!). I was kind of worried it'd be too small for some of my larger mugs, but the center plate is bigger than expected and accommodated every mug in my (very eclectic) collection perfectly. I can confirm that flat-bottomed mugs are the best option for using with this warmer as they do stay hotter, but it still keeps my concave-bottom mugs warm enough for my taste. Also, I looove how sleek the white version looks on my white desk, and the auto-shutoff function is a nice safety feature as an absent-minded person.
