1. Don Don

Where it is: 198 Little Lonsdale Street, Melbourne

Why you need to go: Cheap Japanese food in the CBD that'll fill you up for hours.

Why you need to go: They have $4 pizzas at certain times.

Why you need to go: This hipster haven serves up delicious and unique dishes without a hefty price tag.

8. Ajisen Ramen

Where it is: Various locations.

Why you have to go: Ramen is usually a staple for people who want low-cost yet filling food. Ajisen's authentic ramen bowls are just perfection, as are their handmade gyoza.

Why you have to go: This vegan restaurant offers food that actually looks and tastes delicious, plus they do takeaway.

Why you have to go: Biting into a fresh steam bun is one of life's simple pleasures. Their simple menu offers buns from $2.

Why you should go: STREAT employs homeless youths and provides them with the social support, life and work skills. In turn, they provide us with delicious food and coffee.

Where it is: 4/61 Little Collins St

Why you have to go: Another place that serves up flawless banh mi, served on super fresh bread that is the right balance of soft and crusty.

14. Don Tojo

Where it is: 164 Cardigan St, Carlton

Why you have to go: Cheap and cheerful Japanese food served up in awesome boxes. The chicken teriyaki is particularly delish.

Where it is: 234 Gertrude St, Fitzroy

Why you have to go: It's not easy to find cheap Mexican food that isn't gross, but Trippy Taco certainly delivers. Their burritos could feed two people easily, but they're so good you won't want to share.


16. Donwoori

Where it is: 276 Victoria St North Melbourne

Why you have to go: It's Korean BBQ that you cook yourself at the table. Plus they have amazing service and friendly staff.

Why you have to go: Derby Thai serves up one of the best Pad Thais in Melbourne, and you'll have enough money left over for dessert.
