This Inconsolable Horse Was Beside Itself At Its Owner's Funeral
Emotions are not species specific.
Wagner Figueiredo de Lima was a 34-year-old cowboy and civil servant from Paraiba, Brazil. He was inseparable from his beloved horse Sereno, whom he owned for eight years.
Lima died on New Year's Day from injuries he sustained in a motorcycle accident, according to El Globo. Two days later, he was buried in the city of Cajazeiras. His family and friends made sure Sereno was in attendance.
At the service, something remarkable happened. A visibly distraught Sereno gently touched his head against the side of Lima's coffin, and whined and sighed as a goodbye to his beloved owner. Attendees were shocked at the horse's earnest show of emotion.
A video taken at the service shows Sereno whinnying and moving erratically, possibly due to distress from losing Lima.
"This horse was everything to him, it was as if the horse knew what was happening and wanted to say goodbye," Wando de Lima, Wagner's brother, told El Globo. "All the way to the cemetery he would whimper and beat his hoofs on the ground."
He added that he will take in Sereno, and be responsible for the horse's care from now on.
