For something that’s pretty much free to do (bar the travel costs), go into town and look at your local Christmas lights, or head to somewhere nearby that has exceptionally good ones. Get yourself a hot chocolate, pop your headphones in and play some Christmas music as you walk along and take in the sights.

Go to admire some Christmas lights

Homemade Christmas presents might conjure images of poorly-done crafts or stuff that’s a little bit of an eyesore, but it doesn’t have to be that way! There’s loads of things you can make depending on how crafty you are – from DIY body scrubs and lip balms, to customised planters and crocheted blankets. If all else fails, try making your own peppermint bark – who wouldn’t like to receive candy?

Make someone a Christmas present

Christmas is about giving back and around this time of year, and there are lots of opportunities to do so. You could volunteer in-person at a shelter or donate to a foodbank, or donate online to give money that will go towards toys for children in hospital. If there’s a cause that is close to your heart, this is a good chance to be able to give to it.

Donate to a charity's Christmas appeal

Bundle up in your favourite knitwear and head out to your local Christmas market! It’s a good chance to grab some mulled wine, enjoy the festive atmosphere and get something delicious to eat, and if you find a perfect gift for a loved one while you’re browsing – even better!

Go to a Christmas market

The terrible weather outside is the perfect excuse to stay in with a good book, so why not go for one that’s a little festive? Maybe a classic like _A Christmas Carol_, or something more modern like the heartwarming rom-com _One Day in December_. Light a Christmassy candle, make a cup of tea, and get reading!

Read a Christmassy book

Christmas and cookies go hand in hand, so give baking a try. If you’re already a bit of an expert in the kitchen, challenge yourself by testing out some fancy-looking festive cake recipes, or take some time to beautifully decorate your Christmas cookies. If you’re a beginner, give gingerbread or sugar cookies a go, and if you’re not a confident decorator, remember that everything looks better with some sprinkles thrown on.
