A direct train heading towards the hill country covering the destinations; Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Haputale and Badulla will leave the Colombo Fort Railway Station at various times daily. Departure times are 5.55, 7.00, 8.30, 9.00, 9.45, 10.35, 12.40, 15.35, 17.20, 17.45, and 20.00. You may pick the time most convenient for you.

Why train?

Despite of the partly dilapidated carriages, the smell of diesel and the constant clitter clatter made when moving, the train journey towards upcountry is guaranteed to give you breathtaking views. Emerald tea estates spread across the glorious mountains, the misty tops of these mountains gleaming in the sunlight and tea pluckers dispersed among the estates is a view to die for.

What to expect.

The railway line swirls around the mountain tops, thus the journey is rather slow, however, this means better views. In order to get the perfect train experience it is advisable to travel the full distance from Kandy to Badulla. However when seeking accommodation in holiday bungalows such as Oatlands by Jetwing, in Nuwara Eliya you may have to take the bus or hire a tuk tuk from the train station.
