The 15 Bands That Define Glam Metal

It's nothin' but a good time...

    15. Warrant

You can't start a list that defines hair metal without Warrant. Not because they were good but because they weren't. A couple of overly cheesy hits are all they have to their name and even though there's nothing special about them everyone loves a bit of Cherry Pie.

    14. Quiet Riot

Some thought they had sold out when they covered Slade's 'Cum on Feel the Noize' but they did it brilliantly. And above all they gave the metal world a command they wanted to follow in 'Bang your Head'.

    13. Extreme

Like most '80s hair metal bands, Extreme fell to the grip that a power ballad would have on their career, 'More than Words' is still their best known hit, but it's a shame a lot of people have forgotten some of their better songs.

    12, Hanoi Rocks

It is my belief that if it hadn't been for the tragic and untimely death of drummer Nicholas Dingley a.k.a 'Razzle', in 1985, that Hanoi Rocks would have gone on to be one of the biggest hair metal bands of the '80s. Some killer tunes helped them sky-rocket into the public eye around the same time as Motley Crue.

    11. KISS

They may have been big before the glam metal rise of the '80s but everything about KISS screams hair metal and for that reason they make the list. They may not be the best musicians but they sure know how to market themselves...it's a shame they went all disco on us.

    10. Cinderella

One of the few bands on this list to not hail from California, Cinderella broke out of Pennsylvania and onto the Glam Rock circuit in the mid-'80s. Some truly amazing anthems saw them storm the charts and play with some of the biggest names in rock. they were definitely nobody's fools.

    9. Steel Panther

They're keeping glam metal alive in the modern era with their massive hair and outrageous style. Sure their songs may be ridiculously cheesy and obscene but they're alright for a laugh.

    8. Ratt

Another band who rose to prominence in the '80s with hits like 'Round and Round' and 'Lay it Down'. Like Motley Crue, Ratt dominated the Sunset Strip and are still going strong today, despite a couple of hiatuses.

    7. Guns N' Roses

They are seen as the band that brought about the downfall of hair metal. Their far heavier music caused many to move on from the upbeat, dance style of Glam Metal and bring the genre into a new era. But they still make the list for being a band who mixed heavier music with the style of hair metal.

    6. Bon Jovi

Bon Jovi started off as a true Glam Metal band and are now one of the biggest rock bands in the world. They would have been higher on my list but over time their style has changed to fit in with the changing times. And whilst that is smart in terms of career is has seen them lose that hair metal flair.

    5. Twisted Sister

With their unbelievably outrageous hair-styles and transvestite-like make-up, Twisted Sister caused far more concern amongst parents than many Glam Metal bands, their song 'We're not Gonna Take it' even made the 'Filthy Fifteen' list. In short they just rock and are worthy of their spot in the top five.

    4. Skid Row

One of the bands that are not mentioned as often amongst the gods of Glam Metal but Skid Row are just as much a hair metal band as Crue or Poison. They are the band that made Sebastian Bach's career and even to this day bring every part of the '80s back with they live shows.

    3. Poison

These Pennsylvanian hair metallers were one of the greatest things to happen in the '80s. Their upbeat lyrics and onstage energy is everything that the era of Glam Metal stood for. Hits like 'Nothin' but a Good Time' and 'Talk Dirty to me' had audiences going crazy. If anyone has their number please tell them to come back to the UK soon? Thanks.

    2. Motley Crue

If you were to look up Glam Metal in the dictionary you would see a picture of this Californian mob below it. Bursting onto the Sunset Strip in the '80s, Motley Crue changed the popularity of the venues on the Sunset Strip within a few short months. Their hair styles, make-up and lyrics which excessively referenced parties, booze and babes are what make them one of the greatest bands around. unfortunately next year will see the band call time on their career, a loss that I am dreading.

    1. Van Halen

Only one band could top Motley Crue in this list and it's the band that transformed an entire generation. Van Halen were the inspiration for the majority of bands that broke out into the Glam Metal genre in the '80s and '90s. They are the band that started the trend, as well as making every teenage boy question how hot their teacher was, and thus are thoroughly deserving of top spot on the list.
