Donald Trump has attacked Alex Salmond as "a has-been and totally irrelevant" after Salmond mocked Trump over a legal ruling which will allow a wind farm to be built near his Scottish golf course.
The two men clashed after judges announced on Wednesday that Trump's legal bid to block a wind farm off the coast of his Aberdeenshire golf course had been unanimously rejected.
Salmond, who was first minister when the wind farm plans were made, ridiculed Trump as "three-time loser" over the issue and accused him of breaking promises that were made when Trump built his Trump International Golf Links course.
"[Trump] has failed to meet the claims he made for the Menie Estate golf complex," said Salmond. "He has created a fine golf course, but it does not even have a permanent clubhouse at present, far less the claims of thousands of jobs and billions of investment.
"He has submitted further plans this year, but we are now seven years into the project with very slow progress."
However, a spokesperson for Trump has hit back at Salmond, saying the "irrelevant" former first minister should keep quiet.
"Does anyone care what this man thinks? He's a has-been and totally irrelevant," said the spokesperson. "The fact that he doesn't even know what's going on in his own constituency says it all. We have a permanent clubhouse and the business is flourishing.
"He should go back to doing what he does best – unveiling pompous portraits of himself that pander to his already overinflated ego."
BuzzFeed News has contacted Salmond for a further response.
