36 Of The Most Unexpected Deaths In Movie History

    Warning: MAJOR spoilers ahead.

We recently asked members of the BuzzFeed Community to tell us what they consider to be the most shocking character death in movie history. Here are some of the responses.

    1. Casey Becker, Scream

    Dimension Films

"Drew Barrymore is the poster girl and the biggest name in the cast, and she's dead in the first five minutes."

    2. Bing Bong, Inside Out

    Walt Disney

"I know Pixar likes to leave us devastated, but his death caught me off guard. Especially with that last line of his: 'Take her to the moon for me.'"

    3. Dobby the House Elf, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

    Warner Bros. Pictures

"The death of Dobby from Harry Potter messed me up. I remember being pretty young and watching the whole movie with my mouth hanging open because I couldn’t believe it. Dark times, dark times."

    4. Jack Dawson, Titanic

    Paramount Pictures

"As a 21-year-old woman, I sobbed for 30 minutes after the movie ended. All through the drive home my friends couldn't understand I was crying. A man who was genuinely good and positive died and people like that SHOULD NOT DIE."

    5. Yondu, Guardians of the Galaxy 2

    Walt Disney Studios

"He was a large part of the movie and really became part of the Guardians family. He sacrificed his life for Peter’s and then he just suffocated in his arms. Ugh, ugly tears every time."

    6. Dick Hallorann, The Shining

    Warner Bros.

"I love both the book and movie version of The Shining, but I read the book first. So you can imagine my surprise when they killed a major character who survives the whole ordeal in the book version! The death is also basically a jump scare that comes out of nowhere, so I was shocked to see him die so suddenly."

    7. Stoick the Vast, How to Train Your Dragon 2

    20th Century Fox

"He finds his long lost wife who he thought was dead for 15 years, and then he gets killed by Toothless while trying to protect Hiccup. Hiccup gains one parent and immediately loses the other within an hour of the family reunion. It was a crazy and dark plot twist."

    8. Charlie, Hereditary

"I definitely wasn't sure what exactly to expect from the movie going in, but the sudden death of arguably the central character was one of the most jarring movie experiences. Seriously, it came out of left field and definitely made a lasting impact!"

    9. Fred Weasley, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II

    Warner Bros. Pictures

"I knew it was coming because I had read the books, but I was still sobbing."

    10. Littlefoot's mother, The Land Before Time

    Universal Pictures

"I've never cried so hard in my life. Littlefoot spent most of the movie looking for his mom and when they finally find each other she gets attacked by a T-Rex."

    11. Jenny Curran, Forrest Gump

    Paramount Pictures

"After years of being apart, Forrest and Jenny were finally happily together and then…BOOM! She gets sick and dies. After all Forrest had been through it was such a sad end to the movie."

    12. Marion Crane, Psycho

    Universal Pictures

"I think ~historically~ Marion Crane in Psycho. You think she is the film's protagonist and then OH SNAP SHE DEAD, where's the movie gonna go now? And then it leads you to its ending and you're just like, 'WHAT RIDE WAS I JUST TAKEN ON?'"

    13. Sam, I Am Legend

    Warner Bros. Pictures

"I saw it in theatres, and when Sam, a BEAUTIFUL, LOYAL, and GOOD GIRL died, I stood up, said 'No thank you I am done.' and left. I didn't see the ending of that movie until maybe two years later? And you know what, I stand by my decision to leave. SAM YOU IS THE BEST GIRL."

    14. Creasy, Man on Fire

    20th Century Fox

"When Denzel dies at the end of Man on Fire I lost it. I bawled my eyes out. WHY couldn’t he just whip out his badass moves and kill them like everyone else?"

    15. Malcolm Crowe, The Sixth Sense

    Walt Disney Studios

"When I saw it in theatres, my jaw dropped when I realised that’s what had happened. I’m a pretty analytical person, but I was so wrapped up in what the child character was going through in the movie that I wasn’t even thinking about Bruce anymore!!! Looking back I can see the twist coming, but it still shocked me SO much!"

    16. Captain John Miller, Saving Private Ryan

    Paramount Pictures

"I'm still pissed that Tom Hanks died in Saving Private Ryan. I did not see the movie when it came out but watched it years later with my husband, and I will never get over it. How could they just let him sit on that bridge?!"

    17. Llewelyn Moss, No Country for Old Men

    Miramax Films

"It caught me by surprise the first time I watched it!"

    18. Leslie Burke, Bridge to Terabithia

    Walt Disney Studios

"Bridge to Terabithia was the first movie I ever cried in as a kid. It was so traumatic that I won’t go near a tire swing."

    19. Tadashi Hamada, Big Hero 6

    Walt Disney

    "Not cool Disney, not cool."

    20. Hoban "Wash" Washburne, Serenity

    Universal Pictures

"He just had a glorious moment of saving everyone's ass and chanting 'I'm a leaf on the wind, watch how I soar' when BLAM…he gets harpooned! HARPOONED!"

    21. Ellie Fredricksen, Up

    Walt Disney

"Pixar did so well with showing so much with no dialogue."

    22. Neil Perry, Dead Poets Society

    Walt Disney Studios

"He was such a joy and so lively. I thought he was going to stand up to his dad and everything was going to be OK. When he grabbed the gun I thought 'he’s going to shoot his parents', because I refused to believe that he would die. He was the main character and I related a lot to him so it was a shock to find out he had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound."

    23. Vincent Vega, Pulp Fiction

    Miramax Films

"After following him most of the movie, I had no idea he was going to die! Not to mention that the unique timeline makes you think he's going to live through to the end."

    24. Bill Murray, Zombieland

    Columbia Pictures

"Bill Murray playing Bill Murray in a zombie apocalypse was absolutely hilarious, but since he was playing himself I didn't expect them to kill the beloved actor! Even worse, it happens by accident when a character mistakes him for a zombie and shoots him. Pretty funny, but tragic."

    25. Multiple characters, The Mist

"The ending was so tragic and sad when David steps out of the car and the mist recedes to reveal that the military is there to rescue survivors."

    26. Goose, Top Gun

    Paramount Pictures

"I watched that movie for the first time when I was pretty young because my family is obsessed with jets. Immediately I fell in love with his goofiness, and then he’s dead?!? I was so pissed off! It still makes me cry and I’ve probably seen the movie a hundred times."

    27. Donna Sheridan, Mamma Mia 2

    Universal Pictures

"I will never recover from Donna Sheridan's death in Mamma Mia 2. *Cries in ABBA song*"

    28. Billy Costigan, The Departed

    Warner Bros.

"Almost all of the characters from The Departed get killed in the last 15 minutes and I couldn't believe it the first time I saw it. I watch this movie with friends who haven't seen it and always enjoy watching their reaction to that elevator scene where Leo gets shot out of nowhere. So unexpected and abrupt."

    29. Emma Morley, One Day

    Focus Features

"I watched it on Netflix and I was in so much shock that I screamed and paused the movie, because it was not OK!"

    30. Bambi's mother, Bambi

    Walt Disney

"I'm not sure whether is was the suddenness of it, or because I was so young, but when I first saw the movie I was in denial for the entire thing. I was just expecting her to come back."

    31. Chad Feldheimer, Burn After Reading

    Focus Features

"Theres no buildup, no hints, and he barely gets a 'hi' out after George Clooney finds him in a closet and boom…Shot in the forehead."

    32. Bruno, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas

    Miramax Films

"The first time I saw the movie I had a complete emotional breakdown."

    33. Luke Glanton, The Place Beyond the Pines

    Focus Features

"He dies so abruptly in the first act of the movie. You think it's going to be a movie about a bank robber but then it changes into something different."

    34. Joe Brody, Godzilla

    Warner Bros. Pictures

"The trailer made it seem like he was the main character and he was killed off pretty early in the movie."

    —Julie Kennedy, Facebook

    35. John Coffey, The Green Mile

    Warner Bros.

"Such a gentle soul with the gift of restoring life — remember the little mouse? He was convicted and sentenced to death for a double murder he didn’t commit because he was found with the victims, whom he simply found after someone else killed them, as he was trying to bring them back, but couldn’t. I cried my eyes out for the injustice and waste of such an angel."

    —Kathy Baylis, Facebook

    36. Tracy Mills, Seven

    New Line Cinema

"I still can’t get over that last death. It might just be me, but I never saw that ending coming."
