What Movie Takes Place In Your Home State?

This fantasy/dramedy chronicles the life of Edward Bloom (played by Ewan McGregor and Albert Finney), a traveling salesman who encounters eccentric individuals throughout his life's journey. The movie is rooted in **Alabama**, where most of it was filmed. This includes Wetumpka, which served as Bloom's hometown, Ashton.

_Big Fish_

This biographical drama/survival film follows Christopher McCandless (Emile Hirsch) and his many travels, mostly focusing on his time in the Alaskan wilderness. In total, the film was shot in about 10 states and Mexico, but much of it was filmed on location in **Alaska**, including Denali National Park.

_Into the Wild_

This Coen Brothers comedy classic follows ex-cop (Holly Hunter) and her ex-con husband (Nic Cage). They discover they cannot have children and resort to kidnapping a local quintuplet. **Arizona** is the last name of the baby's real family, where the film takes place, and where it was filmed.

_Raising Arizona_

This drama follows two teenage boys as they discover a mysterious man (Matthew McConaughey) living in an abandoned boat. Writer-director, Jeff Nichols, is from **Arkansas**, and shot the film on location. Nearly half the crew were Arkansas residents, and over 400 locals served as background actors.

_Mud_

The film follows an unstable, social media–obsessed woman named Ingrid (Aubrey Plaza) as she travels to **California** with the hopes of befriending an Instagram celeb (Elizabeth Olsen). While _many_ films take place in the Golden State, _Ingrid Goes West_ gives you a great visual look at places like Venice and Joshua Tree. In true California fashion, the film also features two Hollywood legacies (O'Shea Jackson Jr. and Wyatt Russell) in fantastic supporting roles.

_Ingrid Goes West_

This classic horror film follows Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) who takes his family to an empty, isolated hotel located in the **Colorado** Rockies. While this Stanley Kubrick feature takes place in Colorado, only the exterior shots of the Torrances' apartment building were filmed there.

_The Shining_

A close-knit family's Christmas is interrupted when the oldest son (Dermot Mulroney) brings home his less-than-ideal girlfriend (Sarah Jessica Parker). This star-studded romantic dramedy showcases a beautiful winter town in **Connecticut**. While the movie was predominately filmed in other states, the exterior of the idyllic Stone family home was shot in Greenwich, Connecticut.

_The Family Stone_

This coming-of-age '90s classic takes place over the course of one day in a **Delaware** record store. While the movie wasn't filmed in the Diamond State, it's a rare gem that focuses on the eclectic lives of its young residents. In fact, it's very rare to find a movie that both takes place in and was filmed in the state. For example, _Dead Poet's Society_ was predominately filmed in Delaware, despite being set in Vermont.

_Empire Records_

This hilarious comedy starring Robin Williams and Nathan Lane follows the owner of a drag club in South Beach, who is forced to pretend to be straight during a dinner with his son's fiancée's conservative parents. Much of the film was shot on location in Miami, **Florida**.

_The Birdcage_

This action dramedy by Edgar Wright follows a young getaway driver in Atlanta, **Georgia**. The many car chases (which are all set meticulously to music) give the audience a chance to soak in the Atlanta sites.

_Baby Driver_

While most Hawaiian films tend to be vacation movies, this Oscar-winning dramedy (Best Adapted Screenplay) follows a Honolulu-based man (George Clooney) who is struggling to handle his business and family while his wife remains in a coma. The entire film was shot in **Hawaii**, exploring many of the state's beautiful locations.

_The Descendants_

The most quoted film of 2004, this over-the-top comedy follows a socially awkward teen and his odd family in **Idaho**. The film's director, Jared Hess, grew up in Idaho and filmed the movie on location in Preston. The budget was so small, many of the Preston locals provided food and housing for the crew.

_Napoleon Dynamite_

This music-fueled romantic dramedy follows Rob (John Cusack), a record store owner in Chicago, who recounts his past relationships after being dumped by his girlfriend. Filmed on location in Chicago, this film truly captures life in the famous **Illinois** city.

_High Fidelity_

This Oscar-nominated sports drama starring Gene Hackman follows a small town's high school basketball team. The film was shot in New Richmond, **Indiana**, but takes place in the fictional town of Hickory. The film is loosely based on the Indiana State Champions of 1954 from Milan High School.

_Hoosiers_

This Oscar-nominated fantasy/sports drama starring Kevin Costner follows a farmer who is inspired by voices to build a baseball field, which is visited by deceased players. Much of the movie was filmed in Dubuque County and Dyersville, **Iowa**.

_Field of Dreams_

This classic dramedy starring real-life father and daughter Ryan and Tatum O'Neil, takes place in **Kansas** and Missouri during the Great Depression. The film was shot in many small Kansas towns, including Wilson. To this day, Tatum O'Neil remains the youngest person to ever win an Oscar, which she did for _Paper Moon_ at age 10.

_Paper Moon_

This Cameron Crowe romantic dramedy stars Orlando Bloom and Kirsten Dunst, and follows a man who is forced to go to **Kentucky** to retrieve his father's body. Despite the film's title, most of the town scenes were shot in Versailles, Kentucky. The film also features music by Kentucky natives My Morning Jacket, who play a fictional band in the film.

_Elizabethtown_

Set in New Orleans, this 2017 hit comedy follows a group of old friends who reunite for a music festival with the hopes of reconnecting and letting loose. Featuring an award-winning performance by Tiffany Haddish, the film was shot on location in New Orleans, **Louisiana**. Filming also occurred during the actual Essence Music Festival, which has been held in New Orleans since 1994.

_Girls Trip_

Written by Stephen King, this terrifying film from 1989 follows a young family who discovers the dangerous powers of a nearby cemetery in their **Maine** town. The movie was filmed in many Maine locations, including Ellsworth.

_Pet Sematary_

This "found footage" horror film from 1999 follows student filmmakers as they hike in the Black Hills near Burkittsville, **Maryland** with the purpose of learning about the legend of the Blair Witch. Most of the movie was filmed in Seneca Creek State Park in Montgomery County, Maryland.

_The Blair Witch Project_

This Oscar-winning Spielberg classic follows a resort town's police chief, a marine biologist, and a shark hunter, who all team up to stop the great white shark that's been terrorizing the town. While the film takes place in the fictional town of Amity Island, the film was shot on Martha's Vineyard in **Massachusetts**. Most of the minor roles were played by actual residents of the island.

_Jaws_

This romantic vampire film stars Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston, a married couple whose relationship spans centuries. After living far apart, they reunite in his Victorian home in Detroit. While some of the film takes place in Morocco and Germany, much of it was filmed on location in **Michigan**.

_Only Lovers Left Alive_

This musical drama stars Prince in his first acting role. The film follows The Kid, a young man who escapes his troubled home life to pursue music. **Minnesota** wouldn't be Minnesota without its love of Prince, so it's no surprise that most of the movie was filmed in Minneapolis.

_Purple Rain_

This music-infused comedy by the Coen Brothers stars George Clooney as Everett, a man who convinces two fellow convicts to escape their shackles and go on the run. Set in rural **Mississippi** during the Great Depression, this folky crime movie was filmed in various Mississippi locations, including Jackson.

_O Brother, Where Art Thou?_

This dark drama was the movie that put Jennifer Lawrence on the map, earning her her first Oscar nomination. The film focuses on Ree, a girl from the Ozark Mountains who is searching for her missing father. The entire film was shot in multiple **Missouri** locations and displays the harshness of the Ozark wilderness.

_Winter's Bone_

Directed by Robert Redford, this early '90s drama stars Craig Sheffer and Brad Pitt as two brothers who grow up in the Rocky Mountain region, spanning from WWI to the Great Depression. The film is mostly set in Missoula, **Montana**, but most of the filming was done in Livingston and Bozeman.

_A River Runs Through It_

This high school dramedy stars Reese Witherspoon as Tracy Flick, an overachieving student whose obsession with becoming the student body president causes problems for a teacher (Matthew Broderick). The film takes place in Omaha, **Nebraska**, and was filmed almost entirely on location.

_Election_

This romantic dramedy stars Matthew Perry and Salma Hayek in a classic "opposites attract" tale. While the movie also takes place in Mexico and New York, much of the film was shot in Las Vegas and various parts of **Nevada**. In fact, a baby is born on the Hoover Dam!

_Fools Rush In_

This epic, family adventure stars Robin Williams and chronicles four players as they attempt to survive a dangerous board game that releases animals, people, and more out into the world. Set in the fictional town of Brantford, most of the movie was filmed in Keene, **New Hampshire**.

_Jumanji_

This cult classic comedy was the debut film of **New Jersey** native Kevin Smith. Set mostly in a convenience store in Leonardo, the film chronicles a group of slackers as they try to get through the day. Smith shot the film on location in the real Quick Stop.

_Clerks_

This Marvel movie introduced the world to Chris Hemsworth's Thor in 2011. After being stripped of his powers, Thor is sent away form Asgard and ends up in **New Mexico**. A good portion of the film was shot in Santa Fe and Galisteo.

_Thor_

There are infinite films set in **New York**, but this 1995 action movie staple takes you all over NYC in the course of just one day. Starring Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson, this thrilling ride was filmed on location at multiple NYC attractions, including Yankee Stadium.

_Die Hard With a Vengeance_

One of the first Nicholas Sparks adaptations, this 2002 romantic drama stars Mandy Moore and Shane West, two teens that are thrown together when one is forced to do community service. The movie was filmed in Wilmington, **North Carolina**. You might recognize many of the locations from _Dawson's Creek_.

_A Walk to Remember_

It's an obvious choice, but _Fargo_ is a **North Dakota** staple. When a man botches a crime, craziness ensues as a pregnant cop tries to solve the case. Set in Minnesota and North Dakota, the film was shot on location in various North Dakota locations, including the famous Paul Bunyan statue in Bathgate.

_Fargo_

This romantic dramedy follows Jesse (Josh Radnor, who also directed the film) as he visits his former college and ends up falling for a drama student named Zibby (Elizabeth Olsen). Taking place in an unnamed **Ohio** college, this movie features a great supporting cast, including a cameo performance by Zac Efron. The film was shot in Columbus and Gambier.

_Liberal Arts_

This classic greaser film from 1983 was adapted from the novel of the same name and stars many celebrities when they were young, including Tom Cruise and Rob Lowe. Set in Tulsa, this coming-of-age drama by Francis Ford Coppola was the first in a long line of "Brat Pack" films from the '80s. The movie was filmed throughout **Oklahoma**, including the Admiral Twin Drive-In in Tulsa.

_The Outsiders_

Starring a young and adorable Sean Astin, this classic adventure film from 1985 follows a group of kids on their quest to find buried treasure with the hopes of saving their **Oregon** town. The family favorite takes place in Astoria, where much of the movie was filmed, including the kid's houses.

_The Goonies_

When Pat (Bradley Cooper) is released from a mental heath facility, he goes home to Philadelphia to live with his parents and adjust to a new life. Costarring Jennifer Lawrence (who won an Oscar for her performance), this film was shot exclusively in **Pennsylvania**, and takes a look at the passion of Eagles fans.

_Silver Linings Playbook_

A single father (Steve Carell) travels to **Rhode Island** for a family gathering and falls for his brother's girlfriend. This dramedy was filmed in many Rhode Island locations, including the Point Judith Lighthouse in Narragansett.

_Dan in Real Life_

This dramedy by Lawrence Kasdan follows a group of former college friends who reunite for a funeral in **South Carolina**. This star-studded film features one of the greatest soundtracks of all time and was mostly filmed in Beaufort, South Carolina.

_The Big Chill_

If you're from **South Dakota**, chances are you're very familiar with this western/drama directed by and starring Kevin Costner. Following a Union Army lieutenant in the American frontier, this best picture winner was filmed in multiple South Dakota locations, including the Badlands National Park.

_Dances With Wolves_

This Robert Altman classic from 1975 follows 24 characters in the days leading up to a political rally in **Tennessee**. The film contains an hour's worth of musical numbers, which contributed to its Oscar win for best original song. The dramedy was filmed at many Nashville sites, including Centennial Park.

_Nashville_

Based on a true story, this dark comedy by Richard Linklater stars Jack Black in the titular role. The story of a beloved man who murders his elderly companion, _Bernie_ showcases the ins and outs of a small **Texas** town. The film takes place in Carthage, where it was partially filmed.

_Bernie_

This John Woo action film from 1996 centers on the theft of nuclear weapons and stars John Travolta and Christian Slater as Air Force pilots. While the film was shot in multiple southwest states, it takes place in **Utah**. The mountain areas in the film were shot at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in Kane County.

_Broken Arrow_

Directed by Robert Zemeckis and written by Clark Gregg, this supernatural thriller from 2000 stars Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer. Following a woman who suspects her neighbor of murder, the film is predominately set in her beautiful **Vermont** home. The movie was filmed in east and west coast locations, including the University of Vermont.

_What Lies Beneath_

This historical drama tells the true story of the Lovings and their famous court case, _Loving v. **Virginia**_, which led to the legalization of interracial marriage. Set in Caroline County, the film was shot in multiple Virginia locations and earned Ruth Negga an Oscar nomination.

_Loving_

This romantic drama from 1982 stars Richard Gere as Zack Mayo, who joins the Aviation Officer Candidate School, located in **Washington** state. The real school is in Florida, but the Navy wouldn't permit filming there. The movie was shot in multiple Washington locations, predominately on the Olympic Peninsula.

_An Officer and a Gentleman_

Based on a tragic true story, the film follows the aftermath of a plane crash that killed 75 people, including 37 members of the Marshall University Thundering Herd football team from **West Virginia**. The film by McG stars Matthew McConaughey and takes place in Huntington, where some of it was also shot.

_We Are Marshall_

The hilarious comedy starring Kristen Wiig (who also cowrote the film) follows a down-on-her-luck woman who is asked to be the maid of honor at her best friend's wedding. While there are multiple locations in the film, including Chicago, the movie predominately takes place in **Wisconsin**, where it was filmed. It also earned two Oscar nominations, including one for Melissa McCarthy's performance.

_Bridesmaids_

Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen star in this 2017 drama/mystery about a murder on the Wind River Reservation in **Wyoming**. While much of the movie was filmed in Utah, a few shots were done in genuine Wyoming locations.
