Jewel beetles or metallic wood-boring beetles are named as such because of their glossy iridescent colors. The family is among the largest of the beetles, with some 15,000 species known. They feed on spruce and fir, but hemlock is their preferred food source.

Rhinoceros beetles or Dynastinae are a subfamily of the scarab beetle family. They are well known for their unique shapes and large sizes, and gnarly horn. In many parts of the world, gamblers pit these beetles in fights, and in Japan people can buy them as pets from roadside vending machines.

The Harlequin beetle or Acrocinus longimanus, is known for it's snazzy coloration. Another trait is it's oversize forelegs—which are often longer than the beetles' whole bodies—stretch several inches, serving as sexual displays as well as aiding in climbing trees. They're found in Mexico and South America.

Cyphochilus beetles are known for their brilliant white color to camouflage themselves amidst the pearly fungi found in their Southeast Asian habitat. The chitin filaments used for it's camouflage are just a few micrometres thick – far thinner than a very fine sheet of paper.

The Ladybug or Coccinellidae is a widespread family of small beetles ranging from 0.8 to 18 mm (0.03 to 0.71 inches). There are about 5,000 species of ladybugs in the world including 500 in the United States that all range in colors like yellow, orange, or red with small black spots. A ladybug may consume 5,000 aphids in its life.

The Spanish fly or Lytta vesicatoria is known for it's emerald green coloration. When in danger, their defensive mechanism is a secretion of the chemical cantharidin that irritates animal flesh. Spanish fly can cause men to suffer priapisms, or painfully prolonged erections, and in higher doses cantharidin can be outright fatal. For these reasons, potions and powders made from Spanish flies are illegal for human use in the United States, though livestock raisers occasionally dole it out to encourage farm animals to mate.
