A roman game played in 100 BC with a bent stick and stuffed leather balls called “paganica” first bore hints of the great game. The Song Dynasty that reigned over the great nation of China is said to have played games that resembled golf with several clubs and a ball. However, the origin of the modern game is traced back to the Scotland in the 15th Century.

First rules of golf

In the year of 1744, The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers sets out the first rules of the game. Home to the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, the Muirfield course in Scotland is one of the oldest golf courses in the world. The designer of The Els Club Malaysia, the golf legend, Ernie Els won The Open Championship at the Muirfield course in 2002.

First Ladies’ Golf Union

The year 1893 is not only marked as the one in which the Ladies’ Golf Union was formed in the UK, but also as the year the first British Ladies Amateur Golf Championship was played at Royal Lytham and St Annes.

Golf’s first appearance in the Olympics

With twenty-two male and female participants from four countries, golf was played in the Paris Olympic Games for the first time in 1900. The players completed 36-hole individual stroke events during the Paris Olympics thus stepping up to the plate as an exciting part of the global sports landscape.

Origin of International Golf Federation

The World Amateur Golf Council was established with 35 representatives of national amateur golf organisations in the world in the year of 1958. It becomes the International Golf Federation in 2003.

The grand return of golf to the Olympics
