The photo includes Cook-Searson wearing her chief's headdress, her husband Jim Searson wearing his Metis sash, and their children, all appearing to float on top of Lac La Ronge's waters in a canoe.

Photographer Kandis Riese told BuzzFeed Canada the family had wanted to do a photo in a canoe for months. But originally, it was just going to be in the snow.

“It just so happens we had these amazing ice conditions, which maybe happened once before in the last 20 or 30 years," Riese said. "So they decided we’d still do the canoe thing, but on the ice.”

Riese said Searson had scouted the perfect spot ahead of time and that the whole thing only took a few minutes on Dec. 3. She also said it will be hard for anyone to replicate the photo.

“Where else are you going to get a chief in a canoe on glare ice like that?” she said.
