The controversial Canadian politician's death made global headlines due to his infamous stint as mayor from 2010 to 2014, when his drug and alcohol use and often erratic behaviour briefly made him the world's most famous mayor.

Those who knew Ford from outside of politics shared their grief.

Uncle Rob, You have fought the good fight long enough and now can rest in peace. Love you and will forever miss you.

Ford's nephew Michael followed his famous uncle's footsteps into local politics. He was elected as a Toronto school board trustee in 2014.

To some, Ford was foremost the football coach of the Don Bosco Catholic school.

Rob, thank you for paying attention to a kid from Jane & Finch; I live the lessons you taught me everyday.

Current and former prime ministers extended their condolences to Ford's family.

Rob Ford was Canada’s Donald Trump. A xenophobic, hate-fuelled man. Nobody deserves to die of cancer. But he was a terrible human.

And of course, some of Ford's most colourful episodes as mayor were shared again.

Unlike some other names in the news, Rob Ford never lost to Hulk Hogan

RIP Rob Ford, You will be missed. Godspeed Sir.
