The controversial Canadian politician's death made global headlines due to his infamous stint as mayor from 2010 to 2014, when his drug and alcohol use and often erratic behaviour briefly made him the world's most famous mayor.

Those who knew Ford from outside of politics shared their grief.

Uncle Rob, You have fought the good fight long enough and now can rest in peace. Love you and will forever miss you.

Ford's nephew Michael followed his famous uncle's footsteps into local politics. He was elected as a Toronto school board trustee in 2014.

To some, Ford was foremost the football coach of the Don Bosco Catholic school.
