If you're a fan of European football, then you'd know that the sport had be turned on its head when a so-called "Super League" was announced.
It was billed as a competition where the best European football clubs will go against each other in a league-type setting.
It had 12 founding members when it was first announced: AC Milan, Arsenal , AtlΓ©tico, Chelsea, Barcelona, Internazionale, Juventus, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Tottenham
How this was supposed to be the best of Europe when only 12 clubs from three countries joined is beyond me.
Needless to say, the uproar was instant and very, very, very bad.
Football legends, club managers, and even players from the 12 founding clubs spoke against the so-called Super League.
More importantly, UEFA threatened severe sanctions against the participating clubs, including the possibility of their players being banned from the FIFA World Cup.
But most importantly, it was the fans of the sport who caused the biggest and loudest uproar, pointing out that the Super League was a product of greed of club owners who really didn't care about football and its fans.
Fans took to the streets and rallied against the proposed elite league. Chelsea Football Fans, for example, gathered outside Stamford Bridge, Chelsea's home turf, prior to the kickoff of their Premier League match against Brighton & Hove Albion.
But some 48 hours later, things escalated even more than it already was when English teams announced that they were pulling out of the Super League following the intense backlash. Other teams followed suit.
Does that spell the end of the Super League? Maybe. Maybe not. But this is what the Twitterverse had to say about the whole fiasco:
Many tweets were about how the Super League is pretty much over before it even started
Wow I've had migraines that lasted longer than the #superleague
The superleague in the football landscape #SuperLeagueOut
Recap of #SuperLeague events this week
There are those who don't believe in "Let bygones be bygones"
So the #SuperLeague is no longer going ahead with English clubs. We wonβt forget the 6 βtopβ clubs who were willing to sell-out though.
Dear football supporters, At the end, when Super League fails, we should not forget what these greedy owners were willing to do. We should not let them off the hook, and ensure that they are thrown out of football. We cannot let them off the hook this time #NoToSuperLeague
Many won't seem to forget the greed displayed by the founding clubs
The European Super League. The biggest display of greed since I ate 6 packets of pickled onion Monster Munch in one go.
Fuck the super league and the greedy fuckers at the top!
They will NEVER understand. Fuck the βSuper Leagueβ and anybody with any shred of sympathy towards it. How dare they. Greedy, backstabbing snide bastards.
Still, there are those who point out the supposed hypocrisy of those against the Super League
Premier League: βGreed is goodβ Super League: βCoolβ Premier League: βNOT LIKE THAT!!!β
John Barnes nailing it on #GMB. Itβs just a victory for a different group of billionaires . For the fans? Aye right #SuperLeague
Sky, BT, The Premier League, The FA, UEFA are not upset about the Super League because they care about football or the fans, theyβre upset because someone else, more greedy than they are, is encroaching on their territory.
But for countless of fans, this is a win for football fans across Europe (and, heck, around the world)
The moment Chelsea fans found out the club is pulling out of the Super League. Brilliant scenes at Stamford Bridge π
Klopp openly spoke against it yesterday. Jordan called captains meeting today. Chelsea and others soon opted out. These owners will never be bigger than the fans, players and club. Nit allowing Super League to go ahead is a victory for football ππ»
Perez has been planning the European Super League since 2009. We have shutted it down in less than 48 hours. To all football fans ππ
- Ed Woodward resigns. - FSG considering selling Liverpool - Chelsea and other premier league clubs withdrawing from Super League. - Glazers considering selling Man United. Fans all over the world right now: #SuperLeague #SuperLeagueOut
Don't for one minute give any football club owner any credit whatsoever for pulling out of The Super League. The destruction of the idea is a victory for regular supporters only. A win for people power.
