Version 1: Cereal Box

SUPPLIES

Empty cereal box

Foil

Pin

Box Cutter

Tape

Ruler

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Tape shut the opening of the cereal box.

2. Cut two 2 inch x 2 inch squares out of the top of the cereal box, one on each end of the box.

3. Cover one of the squares with foil, tape down the edges.

4. Poke a pinhole into the foil.

5. Leave the other square alone, it will serve as your view hole.

6. To watch the eclipse, sit down with your back facing the eclipse. Do not turn your head toward the eclipse as this can cause eye damage. Place one eye over the view hole and aim the pinhole in the direction of the eclipse. It may take a couple of tries to properly aim the box, but once you have the hang of it, you will see a projection of the solar eclipse inside of the cereal box.

Version 2: Chip Containers Or Mailing Tube

SUPPLIES

4 potato chip tubes (or 1 mailing tube)

Foil

Pin

Box cutter

Tape

Ruler

INSTRUCTIONS

1. If using a mailing tube, remove the lid from the top, now skip down to step 4.

2. If using potato chip tubes, remove all of the container lids, and remove the bottoms of three of the tubes.

3. Stack the three potato chip tubes on top of one another and tape them into place. Take the fourth tube, with the bottom still intact, and place it at the bottom of the stack, tape it into place. This will make a single large tube.

4. Cut a 2 inch x 2 inch square out of the bottom of the tube. This will be the viewing hole.

5. Cover the top of the tube with foil and tape it in place.

6. Poke a pinhole into the foil.

7. To watch the eclipse, sit down with your side facing the eclipse. Do not turn your head toward the eclipse as this can cause eye damage. Place one eye over the view hole and aim the pinhole in the direction of the eclipse. It may take a couple of tries to properly aim the box, but once you have the hang of it, you will see a projection of the solar eclipse inside of the cereal box.
