Ranking All The Ghostface Kills In The "Scream" Franchise

This ain't a friendly ghost. #NotCasper

Posted on

The masked slasher known as Ghostface has been portrayed by many psychos. How do the various killers -- seven of them in the span of four films -- stack up against one another in the inventiveness of their kills? Here's all 31, ranked from worst to best.

31. Marnie Cooper (Scream 4)

Dimension Films / Via fuckyeahscream4.tumblr.com

How does a brutal death that came during Scream 4's inspired opening rank dead last? Because it got cut from the film and happened off-screen. Boo!

30. Deputy Ross Hoss & Deputy Anthony Perkins (Scream 4)

A lame joke gets tossed in at the end of this equally lame kill, wherein Anthony Anderson and Adam Brody are worse than the Keystone Cops at doing their jobs. So maybe it's actually a scathing political commentary.

29. Steven Stone (Scream 3)

Dimension Films

Great bodyguarding job, with the getting killed by a FRYING PAN.

28. Kate Roberts (Scream 4)

President Laura Roslin deserved better than getting stabbed through the mail slot of her front door.

27. John Milton (Scream 3)

Milton: You don't have to do this, Roman! Just tell me what you want, I can make it happen! Any picture, name your budget, script approval, final cut!Roman: I already have it!LOLOLOL. All the points for that pun.

26. Christine Hamilton (Scream 3)

Dimension Films / Via carrie-whites.tumblr.com

Stalking Christine while taunting her fiancé Cotton Weary on the phone was admittedly a creepy opening to Scream 3. But Christine's ultimate demise -- one stab wound to the back -- left a lot to be desired.

25. Angelina Tyler (Scream 3)

Dimension Films

Angelina hilariously gets stabbed in the chest while she tries fleeing from all these Woodsboro nutjobs. It's not a great kill, but Gale and Jennifer's reactions are PRICELESS.

24. Hallie McDaniel (Scream 2)

Dimension Films / Via scream-movies.com

The prelude to this scene, where Sidney and Hallie are trapped in a car with an unconscious Ghostface, is one THE most tense scenes in the entire franchise. But for a movie that opens with Jada Pinkett lamenting the fact that black people wouldn't be idiots in horror movies, Hallie sort of just stands there and lets Ghostface pop up behind her.

23. Tyson Fox (Scream 3)

Dimension Films / Via scream-movies.com

Tyson is another black person in the Scream franchise who talks about how black people don't survive in horror movies and then GOES TO A MANSION IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE WHEN GHOSTFACE IS KNOCKING PEOPLE OFF.

He should've left town like Joel the camera man in Scream 2 did, but he didn't, so he got tossed off a balcony.

22. Robbie Mercer (Scream 4)

Dimension Films / Via scream-movies.com

Like any self-proclaimed horror movie buff would do, Robbie makes the smart decision of getting wasted while a killer is hacking up his classmates. Then when Ghostface comes calling he invokes the new rules of surviving a horror movie and pretends to be gay (or maybe he is gay, who knows, he's not really a developed character).

It didn't go well.

21. Sarah Darling (Scream 3)

You knew Jenny McCarthy was gonna die in this movie, they didn't hire her to be a new final girl. But the lead-up to her death is surprisingly funny as she mocks her character in Stab 3 ("My boyfriend just died, why am I showering?") before fleeing from the killer into the costume closet... where there are nearly 50 Ghostface costumes hanging from a rack and the killer is inside one of them.

20. Officer Richard Andrews & Officer Andrew Richards (Scream 2)

Bodyguards and law enforcement officers tend to not do well against Ghostface, which, shouldn't they be trained better than this? Ghostface crashes into their car as they're escorting Sidney and Hallie to a safe house. Officer Andrews gets his throat slit and Officer Richards is thrown from the vehicle. He tries to save the girls by hopping on the hood of the getaway car, but is ultimately IMPALED BY A PIPE THE CAR CRASHES INTO. It's one of the sicker deaths in the franchises.

19. Principal Arthur Himbry (Scream)

Dimension Films / Via scream-movies.com

THE FONZ deserved better than getting stabbed with a pair of scissors, yo.

But then again, his death is purely for plot reasons. Kevin Williamson added in an extra death to break up the long stretch between Sidney's attack and the bloodbath at Stu Macher's party.

18. Rebecca Walters (Scream 4)

Dimension Films / Via amityvillehorror.tumblr.com

Rebecca got what was coming to her after sashaying about an empty parking garage in the middle of night. But her mundane kill is made all the better when she's tossed from the room onto a news van in the middle of a press conference.

17. Phil Stevens (Scream 2)

Phil gets his ass killed by listening in on what he assumes is people having sex in the stall next to him. No bruh, it's just Ghostface waiting to STAB YOU IN THE HEAD.
Dimension Films

16. Jenny Randall (Scream 4)

When will girls in Woodsboro learn to stay away from garage doors? This death is an homage to a death that ranks higher up on this list, but seeing Coach Taylor's daughter crawling to her death is a harsh sight indeed.

15. Trevor Sheldon (Scream 4)

Most of the deaths in Scream 4 are homages to the original film, due to the "back to Woodsboro" theme of the movie. Trevor's role in the film harkens back to when Sidney's dad was a suspect in the original killings, only to show up bound and gagged in the closet so that Billy and Stu could frame him for murder. Billy and Stu didn't get away with it, but Jill actually succeeded in murdering Trevor for her batshit scheme.

Oh yeah, Jill also SHOOTS HIS BALLS OFF. So there's that.

14. CiCi Cooper (Scream 2)

Dimension Films / Via bangbitxh.tumblr.com

Why couldn't Buffy kill Ghostface? Oh. You mean this isn't Buffy? Oh, okay. Well then. CiCi getting stalked and murdered at the Omega Beta Zeta house is an exercise in tried patience, since someone threatened to kill her and she DIDN'T leave the house when one of her sorority sisters shows up to grab something from her room. No, she stays in the house and lets Ghostface do what he does best. #StabBitches

13. Derek Feldman (Scream 2)

Dimension Films

Poor Derek. All he wanted to do was love Sidney. But loving Sidney usually means you end up getting killed. His death in particular was tragic, because during his final moments Sidney questioned whether or not he was Ghostface this time around.

12. Charlie Walker (Scream 4)

Charlie and Jill are the killers in Scream 4. But as Jill told Lady Freeze when she pulled her plug, this is a one woman show. Scream 4 had us thinking this would be the ultimate homage to the original film, but nope, Jill wasn't about that co-conspirator life.

Charlie is the only person to don the Ghostface mask who wasn't killed by Sidney and her cohorts.

11. Steven Orth (Scream)

Dimension Films / Via scream-movies.tumblr.com

The first on-screen death in the franchise, Steve never really got the chance to put up a fight. His survival was dependent on his girlfriend Casey getting a horror trivia question right, but there was no way Ghostface was gonna let him survive even if she got it right. Steven was gutted and his insides spilled all over Casey's patio.

10. Kenny Jones (Scream)

Dimension Films

Kenny not only had to put up with verbal abuse from Gale Weathers, he also got his throat slit trying to save Sidney and her friends. In an ingenious moment in the film, a throwaway plot point about the hidden camera inside the house having a time delay ends up being Kenny's downfall when he has no idea the killer is already behind him.

9. Cotton Weary (Scream 3)

Cotton Weary is a major character in the first three films, so his death naturally replaced the "celebrity gets offed in the opening" modus operandi of the previous films. While Cotton's girlfriend's death is lackluster, Ghostface stalks her while pretending to be Cotton. When Cotton shows up at the apartment to save Christine, she attacks him, thinking he's there to kill her. And then Ghostface, having created chaos in Cotton's final moments, finally strikes.

8. Jennifer Jolie (Scream 3)

Jennifer's death is probably the saddest in Scream 3, just because Parker Posey makes her the best character. Imagine if she'd been able to drive Gale crazy in Scream 4 instead of that boring lemon square baking Deputy? As Jennifer tries escaping Ghostface, she gets caught behind a one-way mirror in a secret room. She can see Dewey and Gale, but they can't see her. Once Dewey realizes she's behind the mirror, it's too late.

7. Randy Meeks (Scream 2)

The only character in the core four from the original film to get killed, Randy's death is one of the biggest moments of the second film. While Ghostface taunts him on the phone, Randy's standing in broad daylight in the middle of campus so it seems like he's safe. The key word being "seems." In an unexpected moment, the killer yanks Randy into Gale's news van and brutally stabs him to death.

6. Olivia Morris (Scream 4)

Olivia's death ranks as one of the most brutal in the series. The sheer amount of blood in the room is almost at Johnny Depp in A Nightmare on Elm Street level. Olivia foolishly goes into her house alone for some reason, while her friends are having a sleepover next door. Jill and Kirby get a call from Ghostface who says he's hiding in the closet. It isn't until it's too late they realize the closet he meant was Olivia's.

5. Tatum Riley (Scream)

Dimension Films / Via scream-movies.com

Tatum definitely puts up a fight when Ghostface traps her in the garage, hitting him with the door on the fridge and pelting him with beer bottles. But Tatum is a typical horror movie "hot girl with large breasts," so how the fuck she ever thought she was gonna be able to crawl through a doggie door to safety is BEYOND.

4. Tom Prinze (Scream 3)

Dimension Films / Via scream-movies.com

A himbo actor cast as Dewey in Stab 3, Tom's death is one of the more clever kills in the franchise. After the body of Jennifer's bodyguard is found, the lights go off in the house and a fax comes through (REMEMBER FAXES?) with a message from the killer. Everyone gets to the line "The killer will give mercy to..." before Gale and Dewey pull them out the house.

But, of course, Tom is an idiot. So he runs back inside to see what the rest of the fax says. Ghostface finishes with "...whoever smells the gas." Which, in the pitch black house, Tom can only read by using his lighter -- which cause him and the entire house to explode.

3. Kirby Reed (Scream 4)

Dimension Films / Via scream-movies.com

Kirby is the absolute best part of Scream 4, picking up where the sorely missed Randy left off with an expert knowledge of horror movies. Ghostface tries quizzing her with horror movie trivia to save a bound and gagged Charlie, much like Casey was forced to do in the original Scream. But Ghostface isn't playing fair this time around. Casey wins the trivia round and goes to save Charlie... only to discover he's the second killer. He stabs her in the gut.

On the Scream 4 DVD commentary, Wes Craven hinted that Kirby may have survived since her body was still moving after Charlie stabbed her. So let's hope she pops up in a Scream 5 or the forthcoming MTV series based on the films.

2. Maureen Evans (Scream 2)

Dimension Films / Via halloweenlove.com

Scream 2 has an, excuse the pun, KILLER opening. The idea of flipping the script on the first movie by turning it into Stab, a movie starring Heather Graham as Drew Barrymore is hysterical. And the opening should be studied in film classes across the nation based on Jada Pinkett Smith's treatise on black people in horror films. Her death is one of the cruelest, because she's slaughtered in public, but in a theater full of people in Ghostface costumes, everyone assumes it's just a part of the movie.

1. Casey Becker (Scream)

Dimension Films

Duh.
