5. Bates Motel

This show is the coming of age story of American Psycho Norman Bates. After the sudden death of her husband, widow Norma Bates and her son Norman (Freddie Highmore) move to a small town in Oregon to start a new life where they run a motel. Watch Norman Bates as a shy and soft-spoken teenager and see what ill events shape him into becoming a serial killer. Vera Farmiga (Norma Bates) shows her versatility as an actress as she plays the role of a mother who is willing to do anything to protect her mentally unstable son. This show leaves you questioning whether it is nature or nurture that leads you down the path of a full on sociopath killer.

4. The OA

One of the most thought provoking shows. Surrounding the disappearance of a blind woman who returns home after years in captivity with her vision restored. She befriends a group of misfits who she shares with the story of her time in captivity. If you enjoy scifi fantasy and the exploration of other dimensions this show will blow your mind!

3. Girl Boss

Netflix / Via

This is the origin story of former CEO and founder of Nasty Gal retailer, Sophia Amoruso. Sophia is possibly one of the most relatable tv characters in a show I have ever seen she is young, angry at the world and never taken seriously as a woman even by her own father. After being fired from her job as a shoe salesman, stealing a carpet, and buying an original vintage leather jacket for $8 she struggles to turn an idea into a thriving business. Even during a medical crisis, a bad customer review, and being banned from Ebay almost cause her to lose everything she never gives up and endeavours to become an entrepreneur.

2. Chewing Gum

Netflix / Via

Chewing gum tells the hilarious story of Tracy a 24 year old virgin who lives a sheltered life with her religious family in London. Watch as she awkwardly tries to lose her virginity in several laugh out loud and peculiar ways getting mostly awful advise from the neighbors in her apartment complex. With a gay boyfriend, a pastor for a mother, and uncontrollable nose bleeds, navigating relationships has never seemed more challenging for the ill-informed Tracy.

1. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Tina Fey does it again in another hilarious and ever quotable series! Kimmy Schmidt (Ellie Kemper, aka Erin from The Office) moves to New York City after she and three other women are rescued from being held hostage in a bunker for 15 years. The show gives endless throwbacks to the 90's as quirky and naive Kimmy learns to live in the modern world with the help of her roommate a struggling actor and boss. In addition to laughs what makes this series truly outstanding is its ability to showcase important topics such as mental health, Native American rights and the affordability crisis.
