U2 and Jay-Z teamed up to perform together at the 2009 European MTV Awards at the Brandenburg Gate to mark the 20 year anniversary since the fall of The Berlin Wall. Apparently fans who did not have tickets had their view restricted by MTV concert organizers with their own wall. Berlin’s city government released this statement: “I find it rather unfortunate and unusual for organisers of a free concert – particularly one of this nature – to demand such a barrier.“ According to MTV it’s for the fans’ own good: “We are asking fans without tickets to watch the concert on television. The barrier is for security reasons and to contain the crowd, allowing the surrounding shops and restaurants to continue trading. I’m sure we haven’t heard the end of this.
