Meet Dhee, Bangladesh's First Lesbian Comic Book Character

Her stories will be used to conduct 15 countrywide campaigns to educate people about gender and sexuality.

Boys of Bangladesh aka BoB, a network of self-identified gay Bangladeshi men, have launched the country's first lesbian comic book character "Dhee".

The character has been developed to advocate for BoB's Project Dhee, an initiative that aims to take forth "the nascent movement for the rights of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) persons in Bangladesh," reads BoB's press release.

Dhee's stories are displayed on flash cards instead of a traditional comic book.

"Dhee" is a Bangla word which translates to knowledge, wisdom, or comprehension. With her stories, BoB is set to conduct 15 campaigns in Bangladesh to educate people about gender and sexuality.

The character, which was officially launched at the British Council, is intended to address sexuality and gender-based taboos in South Asian society with stories about her growing up.

"Dhee makes human beings curious, innovate and seek out the unknown. When knowledge merges with our human instinct of compassion, we simply become better human beings," states BoB's press release about Dhee.

In a comment on their Facebook page, BoB says, "Sadly the comic is not for individual distribution. It is developed as an advocacy material for the countrywide campaigns we are conducting." So if you're looking for a copy, tough luck for now.
