What would you like students to know about your organization?

Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority Inc. is a multicultural sorority that strives to be the premier organization committed to providing a mechanism of empowerment to all women. We believe in achieving this through our five principles which are: academics, community service, cultural awareness, social interaction, and morals and ethics. Founded in 1990, Sigma Lambda Gamma remains the largest and fastest growing Latina-based sorority in the nation with close to 10,000 members across the nation. Here in the Zeta Chapter, you can always find a Woman of Distinction proudly sporting her Shocking Pink and Majestic Purple on the quad, in the classroom, or serving the community.

What does your organization do for the campus and surrounding area?

The main philanthropies of Sigma Lambda Gamma are breast cancer awareness and the TRIO programs. While the sorority as a whole donates over $14,000 to breast cancer research, the Zeta chapter contributes to this through our annual “Pink Pong Tournament” on campus where all proceeds go towards the fight against breast cancer. SLG (Sigma Lambda Gamma) also participates in the TRIO program on campus, which is a student outreach service, designed to identify and provide services for disadvantaged students. As a chapter, we also participate in various community service activities each semester.

What type of events do you do?

Along with our annual Pink Pong Tournament, the Zeta Chapter is known for a couple of other events focused on our Cultural Awareness and Academic principles. Women of Distinction for Women Empowerment (WODFWE) is an annual event hosted by the Gammas to spread empowerment to the women here at Illinois State University, which includes a guest speaker and panel of women. Some of the past WODFWE events have discussed topics such as cultural appropriation, women of color, and Eurocentric beauty standards, and intersectional feminism.

Also, because college can be a stressful experience for many, Zeta chapter hosts “Study with the Gammas” a few times during the semester to encourage the Illinois State community to join us as we work through our assignments together. Usually held at Milner Library, we use this as a time to encourage each other and meet new faces as we work through our coursework together.

What events should the campus look out for?

This semester’s Gamma Week will take place from October 23rd through October 28th. This week will be filled with fundraising, community service, social interaction, and of course our signature events. Stay tuned for more information!
