Gigi Hadid Wore A Hijab On The Cover Of Vogue Arabia And People Are Not Happy About It

“Gigi ‘I have Palestinian and Muslim roots only when it benefits me’ Hadid”.

1. Gigi Hadid is the cover model for the first ever issue of Vogue Arabia.

Inez Van Lamsweerde / Vinoodh Matadin / Vogue Arabia

Hadid posted the photo to her Instagram where she praised the magazine.

In full her caption said:

“I think the beautiful thing about there being international Vogue’s is that, as a fashion community, we are able to celebrate, and share with the world, different cultures. Being half-Palestinian, it means the world to me to be on the first-ever cover(s) of @voguearabia, and I hope that this magazine will show another layer of the fashion industry’s desire to continue to accept, celebrate, and incorporate all people & customs and make everyone feel like they have fashion images and moments they can relate to… & learn and grow in doing so. Thank you @deenathe1st for your vision and for having me on this cover… by the incredible @inezandvinoodh - so much love.”

2. The photos were shot by Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin and have been described as being styled in a “uniquely Arabian way”.

Vogue Arabia’s editor-in-chief said “…there’s no better first ‘face’ to lead the charge for Vogue Arabia than Gigi.”

3. Though Hadid is part Palestinian, people were unhappy with the photoshoot.

5. People have called it appropriation.

6. And said that she used the hijab as “art”, while other women are attacked for wearing it.

1 ur not muslim stop using the hijab for "art" 2 stop using the title "half palestinian" for ur benefit when u dont… https://t.co/3iusmoWzDc

— mahershala's oscar (@yagirlbushra)

So Gigi is getting praised for wearing a Hijab bc "fashion" while women who actually wear Hijab are attacked, shame… https://t.co/TnG1sSTuUJ

— sana (@imperialzjm)

My girl Gigi can wear the hijab and make it a fashion statement but if I wear it I'm oppressed. Got it. https://t.co/axJPqC9rh6

— Fatmeh Cheaib (@fatmeh32)

CAN GIGI HADID STOP WEARING HIJAB AS A FASHION STATEMENT !!!! MUSLIM WOMEN ARE SHAMED FOR IT YET SHE CAN PARADE ARO… https://t.co/vweA9ZN1fM

— NUHAA (@nuhaasoeker)

10. And it even got political.

so Gigi Hadid remembers her Palestinian roots when vogue Arabia want to feature her but when it comes to political problems she's quiet

— layan (@layansarh)

gigi "i have palestinian and muslim roots only when it benefits me" hadid https://t.co/BLZ34WbnBv

— ️️️️️ (@lgbtziam)

12. And people accused her of playing “dress up”.

why is Gigi playing dress up when there are so many beautiful ACTUAL hijabis? I am tired. https://t.co/JoNe2rkw2m

— 🥀 (@ovozainab)

13. But some said that as she grew up in a Muslim household, she wasn’t appropriating.

Y'all are continuously bashing Gigi Hadid for her vogue shoot. Her father is Muslim, she was born in a Muslim hous… https://t.co/59mwj6pbxG

— t△⃒⃘co (@TheCountess___)

14. People defended Hadid due to her Palestinian father and said it’s not appropriation.

people are really hating on gigi hadid for "appropriating middle eastern culture" when she's palestinian....ok

— ☭ (@leftistbrownboy)

Has everyone forgotten that Gigi Hadid is half Palestinian? She's as entitled to wear the hijab and most of you Twitter muslims are.
