Some things I've learned as a newbie event director. Some common sense, some trial and error, these are things to consider if you're planning to host a book/author/reader convention.

5 Things New Con Directors Should Know

For book lovers - finding a local author convention or signing feels like winning the lottery. New events are popping up all over the country, seemingly overnight, and many are disappearing just as quickly. It's not an easy task, but it can be the most fun you'll have while turning your hair gray! Here are 5 things I've learned while planning Coastal Magic Convention.

    1. Location, Location, Location

A prime spot on the beach is a fantastic draw... as long as the parrots in the lobby don't pierce your attendees' eardrums, and no one catches the plague from the swimming pool.

    2. Save The Date

Mid Spring through late Summer is prime con season, SO MANY EVENTS (RT, RWA, BEA, ALA, SDCC, NYCC, RAGT, DC, etc., etc., etc.) Search the calendar for a weekend that you don't share with another con, a snowstorm, sporting event, or holiday.

    3. Holy ALL THE MONEY, Batman!!

Between event space rentals, hotel reserve blocks, catering, travel, author fees, vendors, advertising, printing, and giveaways, you'll wish your name started with Richie and ended with Rich!

    4. Herding Authors

Authors are our rockstars, and we love them. They are also all on DIFFERENT deadlines, which makes trying to coordinate something with more than 3 of them at a time a lot like herding kittens.

    5. Registration

Just because you build it, doesn't mean they'll come. Promotion is a full time job. It can mean the difference between a successful event, and sitting in a hotel with a room full of authors, all by yourself. (In this situation, not nearly as cool as it would be under other circumstances.)
