Once described as "The Statue of Libido", Mae West was a scandalous figure in her day. She was arrested on obscenity charges for her play _Sex_ and was maligned by religious leaders for her rampant, bawdy double entendres. Mae was an early supporter of the women’s liberation movement and championed sexual independence long before it was acceptable in Hollywood.

Clara Bow was the original “It Girl”, a freewheeling flapper and a sensation in the 1920s. She personified the Roaring Twenties and was an idol to a new generation of girls hungry for independence and excitement. In her movies, Bow played working-class girls who smoked, drank, danced, and enthusiastically chased men - something that scandalized the older generations.

Jean Harlow was the original blonde bombshell and Marilyn Monroe’s own idol. Her platinum blonde bob, red lips, long gowns and thin, arched eyebrows became iconic, as did the mouthy, wisecracking vamps she played in films. She was both admired and maligned for her on-screen persona as a “floozy” at a time when cinema was heavily censored.

Rita Hayworth began as a dancer named Margarita Cansino. She changed her name and hair at the suggestion of film executives and shot to stardom as a redheaded, all-American glamour girl. Dubbed “The Love Goddess”, Hayworth became the most lusted after pin-up girl during WW2 and is best remembered for her sizzling femme fatale in _Gilda_.

Dubbed “The Brunette Bombshell”, Jane Russell was admired for her voluptuous figure, especially her chest. Her first movie _The Outlaw_ made her a certified sex symbol, but had difficulty being released. The overt sexuality in the film and the great attention paid to Jane’s physical assets made it difficult for the film to pass the censors at the time.

Marilyn Monroe was the greatest sex symbol of her era and perhaps of all time. Her bombshell curves along with her beauty, charisma and simmering sexuality made her an icon, while her tragic personal story has resonated with millions. She often played characters who appeared sweet and naïve but were extremely aware of their own intense sexual appeal.
