6 Things your 8 year old daughter wants you to know

If you have a daughter age 7 or younger, know that 8 is when things really start to change.

1. I really want to drink your coffee

Or wear your jewelry. Or carry a (mostly empty) purse at all times. Or pay the check (with your debt card, of course). Really, anything I can think of that will give the illusion that I am older than I am. That is what I want to do. I'll even claim my baby sister as my own child to strangers and let you handle the clarification. Thanks!

2. Everything you do is embarrassing

Don't hug me or hold my hand or walk to close to me in public. You are no longer allowed to sing or dance in that funny way that used to make me laugh. Now, it makes me cringe. Everything, from the shoes you are wearing to the way you wave at me in the drop off line at school, is mortifying. Cut that shit out now.

3. I have no control over my emotions

One second I am the excited, happy and easy going child you have always known. The next, I am a crying, miserable, nervous wreck incapable of reason. Don't ask me what happened, I honestly don't know. And the fact that you keep asking is just making it worse. Everything is wrong, I'm horrible and nothing will make it better.

4. I've finally masters sarcasm, so get used to it

Remember that time, when I was 4 years old, and I asked you "What's sarcastic mean?" and your reply was, "I'll tell you when you're older and can understand." Well guess what? I get it now and I LOVE IT. Even more than you do. I've got the eye roll and the 'I really don't care' tone perfected. Now when I give you a big cheesy smile and a thumbs up it fully means "Shove it up your ass, I don't care." I hope you like this attitude, cause it's only going to get worse until college!

5. I am no longer your baby…

I don't need you, really. I can fix my own plate, walk myself to class, and sit in the car alone for 5 minutes while you run into the store. I don't like 'baby clothes' with cute animals on them, I'll order at the restaurant for myself, AND I DON'T NEED TO HOLD YOUR HAND!!!

6. .…except when I am

OK, I still need your help tying my shoes sometimes. And I still like it when you play with my hair. I like pretending that we're sisters. And yes, I have to have you lay down with me at night in order to fall asleep. Sometimes I get up at night just to tell you "I love you".

I'm only eight, but everything is changing. And it's going to get worse before it gets better. Just be patient with me. And maybe we'll both survive and come out the other side with some fun stories.

But seriously…when CAN I start drinking coffee??
