1. Sleeperzz, Rogart, Sutherland.
Sleeperzz is a fantastic collection of vintage vehicles, including several 1960s railway carriages and a 1930s showman wagon, which have been turned into a hostel. Some carriages are filled with bunkbeds, while another features a shared self-catering kitchen. Prices start at £17 per adult per night, £12 for kids.
2. Skyewalker Hostel, Isle of Skye.
This awesome Star Wars-themed hostel on the Isle of Skye was voted best in Scotland by Hostelworld in 2012, 2014, and 2015. Guests can choose to stay in quirky "Jedi huts" (pictured), admire the C-3PO mural, or relax under the stars in the glass solardome, all from just £17 per person per night.
3. Taigh Dhonnchaidh, Gearrannan Blackhouse Village, Isle of Lewis.
These traditional thatched Hebridean blackhouses date back several centuries, and were occupied by crofters until the 1970s. The largest cottage has been converted into a hostel for ten people, with cosy bunkbeds that you can book for just £15 a night.
4. The Lazy Duck Hostel, Nethy Bridge, Cairngorms National Park.
The Lazy Duck is a legendary boutique hostel in the Scottish Highlands, with a hot tub, hammocks, and a cute hideaway called the "Duck's Nest" (pictured left), which sleeps two people. The shared hostel sleeps up to eight people, and costs £19 per person on weeknights, and £23 per person at weekends.
5. Glebe Barn Bunkhouse, Isle of Eigg.
Glebe House is a converted 19th-century barn in the Inner Hebrides with a spectacular view of the sea. It sleeps 22 people and hosts traditional music sessions, and guests often spot dolphins and golden eagles. Plus it's only £16 per person per night.
6. Bunkhouse at the Roundhouse, Laggan, Cairngorms.
This quirky, independent eight-bed hostel is set in the fields of a working farm overlooking the Spey valley in the Cairngorms National Park. The bunkhouse is split into a mezzanine, a four-person room, and loft, and it costs £18 per person per night.
7. Comrie Croft Steading Hostel, Crieff, Perthshire.
This lovely, quirky eco-campsite and bunkhouse is situated near the charming village of Comrie in Perthshire. The farmsteading hostel sleeps 58 and costs £20 per person per night. It's also a popular destination for weddings and can be hired for exclusive use (many thanks to Crieff Wedding Photography for the images).
8. Gatliff Trust Howmore Hostel, South Uist.
Gatliff Hebridean Hostels Trust is a charity that runs three historic croft-style hostels on the islands of Berenay, Harris, and South Uist in partnership with the islanders themselves. Howmore sleeps 16 people in total, and costs just £14 per night.
9. Iona Eco-Hostel, Isle of Iona.
This pretty little hostel on the Isle of Iona is tucked away in a field beside the sea, sheltered by hills and rocky outcrops. It features a charming, traditional corrugated-tin shepherd's hut, which sleeps two people. It costs £21 for a bed in the mixed-sex dorms, and the cute wee hut costs £60 per night (£30pp).
10. Loch Ossian Youth Hostel, Fort William, Highland.
This homely, secluded little hostel is run by the Scottish Youth Hostel Association, and sits right on the shore of beautiful Loch Ossian. It has an open fire, a cute wee shop, and beds for just £18.50 a night. What's more, it's solar powered and 100% eco-friendly.
11. Inversnaid Bunkhouse, Stirling.
This absolute beauty of a hostel was originally a 19th-century church. It's since been converted into budget accommodation, and also a licensed restaurant, so you don't have to self-cater unless you want to. It still has its original stained-glass windows and ceiling, and it's not far from Loch Lomond. Bunkhouse prices start at £19 per person.
12. Black Isle Berries Bunkhouse, Ryefield Farm, Tore.
This newly built bunkhouse is situated on a working fruit farm in Ross and Cromarty. It sleeps up to 19 people, either as a group (they allow exclusive use), or as individuals for £20 per bed per night. Plus it has a great little farm shop! The Black Isle (actually a peninsula) is a great jumping-off point for a Scottish highland adventure.
13. Am Bothan Bunkhouse, Isle of Harris.
This bright, cheery Scandinavian-style Hebridean hostel has a friendly communal area decorated with a real fishing boat and other nautical-themed bits and pieces, which is appropriate given the fact it's right beside the sea. It's also situated on the Hebridean Way Cycle Route, so it's perfect for cyclists. Beds start at £18 per person.
14. Rowardennan Lodge Hostel, Loch Lomond
This beautiful hostel is as close as you can get to Loch Lomond without actually setting foot in it, although if you want to get even closer you can hire one of the hostel's kayaks and go for a paddle. With 57 bedrooms it's hardly boutique, but it still feels friendly, tucked away, and secluded. Adult beds are £16 per night, children stay for £14.
15. Kagyu Samye Ling Monastery and Tibetan Centre for World Peace and Health, Eskdalemuir, Dumfries and Galloway.
This truly spectacular Tibetan Buddhist complex was the very first Buddhist centre ever to be established in the West. The monks run Johnstone House (also known as Zamsem House) as a dormitory, which sleeps up to 15 people. It costs £28 per person, but you do get a slap-up vegetarian breakfast thrown in. Plus, the feeling of inner peace is priceless.
