I worked as a cashier at a big hardware store. We occasionally get people who purchased tools at either a pawn shop or some other secondhand store and try to return them. One night during the summer, I was giving a break at our returns area and this customer comes up with a tool that has very clearly not been taken care of. He tells me that he bought this tool over Christmas and they used it twice and then went to use it that day and it wasn’t working and he didn’t have a receipt but he wanted to swap it out for a new one. After speaking to my manager and verifying our policy, I informed him that the only thing we could do was to send it to our repair center since it was outside the 90 day return policy. He stared at me and said “well, how do you know it’s been more than 90 days?” And I looked him and said “sir, you told me that you bought this for Christmas. It’s June.” He then demanded to speak with a manager who told him the same thing.
