The Artist Behind A Gorgeous Tribute To Paris Has Been Arrested

Hadi Heidari was taken into custody on Monday from the Iranian newspaper where he worked.

Hadi Heidari, an Iranian artist, released on Saturday a gorgeous image he'd drawn in tribute to the victims of last week's terrorist attacks in Paris. On Monday, he was arrested at the office of the newspaper where he works as a cartoonist, according to local reports.

The reason for Heidari's arrest remains unclear hours after the fact, as do the charges he potentially faces. He was working at the Shahrvand, an Iranian newspaper, when he was detained according to the New York Times.

Sources told the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran "that they were not certain which organization arrested Heidari, but added that he was likely arrested by the Revolutionary Guards Intelligence Organization."

Heidari — whom Radio Free Europe describes as working with "reformist publications — was also arrested during the 2009 crackdown in Iran following the country's disputed presidential elections. He was also brought in for questioning in 2012 for a cartoon — titled "Blindfolded" — that hardliners said, according to the Guardian, "mocked Iran's martyrs and former soldiers with what they said was its reference to the headbands worn by Iranian fighters."
