Women, Tell Us The Tips That Have Helped You Advocate For Yourself In The Workplace

It's not always easy, especially in male-dominated fields.

One thing I've always struggled with is speaking to authority, especially when it comes to superiors at work.

I've talked to a lot of other women who feel the same way, especially when dealing with a male boss.


So I thought I'd open it up to you — what tips have you heard or utilized that helped you advocate for yourself at work?


Did you get some really good advice on negotiating your salary upon first getting hired?


A lot of women get advice to not be "difficult" in the workplace and to be grateful for what they're offered, while men will oftentimes see it as more of a relationship and advocate for a higher salary.

Or how to network within your company and advocate for leadership positions?


Maybe you felt there were a lot of men in leadership and brought this up to HR and helped create more opportunities for women in leadership. Or maybe you successfully applied for a leadership position in your company and created opportunities for other women!

Did you have an experience where you knew a male colleague was being paid more, and successfully advocated for a raise?

White women are, on average in 2020, paid $0.81 for every dollar a white man is paid, and that number significantly decreases for BIPOC women. In addition, salary is not often discussed in the workplace, and it can be hard to know if you're being paid as much as your male colleagues.

Or do you just have some tips on how to make yourself heard in meetings where you're often talked over?
